The hilarious aspect of Black Panther is that it doesn't look like it got nominated for much else besides Best Picture. No director nod. No acting nods. It has seven nominations, only Roma, The Favourite (both ten), Vice, and A Star is Born (eight) got more. - Best Picture - Best Score - Best Song - Best Costume Design - Best Production Design - Best Sound Editing - Best Sound Mixing Sure, most of them are in technical categories, but that's pretty much par for the course when it comes to blockbusters at the Academy Awards.

I still don't get why, if they can nominate up to ten films, why not fill all ten spots? There's always between five and ten. I say go by NFL overtime rules, go back to five movies, you want to be nominated for Best Picture? Make your movie better. I know it's all voting, but I do agree that some of those old f***s need to move on. The ones who always want The English Patient or Crash to win. The number of films is determined by the allocation of votes. They don't just fill a set number of spots I don't think.

It also means that there's barely any chance of Black Panther actually winning Best Picture. I can't think of any movie that won Best Picture without even being nominated for any of the four acting awards or director. It does come off a bit as the Oscars' token "See? We're in touch with the cultural zeitgeist!" nomination of a popular movie because it also had some artistic merit.

It's only happened once, back in 1932 for "Grand Hotel", which actually won despite Best Picture being the only award it was nominated for.

It's got the unfortunate position of being a non-animated kids movie.

I think this is the first time where two of my favorite live action movies from last year are Best Picture noms (Panther, Klansman), and my favorite animated movie from last year is up for Best Animated Picture (Spider-Verse).

Dammit, Mary Poppins returns deserves more. The wardrobe in that movie was insane

Dammit, Mary Poppins returns deserves more. The wardrobe in that movie was insane It got the nom for score, song, production design and costume design. I'd probably throw it in for visual effects too, but otherwise that is just about right for the movie I think.

I loved Black Panther but it didn't need a Best Picture nomination. Being realistic it definitely won't win Best Picture. That's either going to go to Bohemian Rhapsody or A Star Is Born which I found both of them to be amazing.
Now I do hope Rami Malek or Bradley Cooper wins the Academy Award. Although Rami definitely deserves it more in my opinion. He deserves it just for the Live Aid performance alone.
Lady Gaga needs to win for Best Actress.
And agreed with everyone on Spiderverse deserving to win best animated feature. Seriously that was the best Spider-Man film I had seen in years and if it doesn't win I'll be very, very, very, very, VERY disappointed.

Spiderverse honestly should be a dual nominee in both animated and best picture. It's one of the overall best films of the year. Not only on a narrative/performance level, but as a technical feat, it's an incredibly innovative and creative movie in a time where big studios like to keep things safe and traditional.

Sadly I see Incredibles or Ralph taking it, because..... [Eyewitness News caster] "Disney is the parent company of ABC, which will air the 91st Annual Academy Awards." [/EN caster] This is why I see BP repeating its success at SAG last night being more than a slight possibility. Well, the Marvel connection and "so groundbreaking" and etc.

Big blockbuster movies like this tend to do well with those technical/production awards. If a movie that looks like this doesn't win costume design, there's a problem.

Well, the Marvel connection and "so groundbreaking" and etc. That is absolutely not a factor at all. The MCU has a pretty paltry ten nominations and zero wins since its inception. If they were really in the bag for Disney, they'd have scored a few acting nominations and multiple technical category wins. The Oscars are as political as anything, but they're not swayed by airing on ABC whatsoever.

If Beale Street Could Talk was awful. Regina King should not have won that.
I just want The Favorite to win everything because it's also really terrible, but it is about duck racing, so that's enough for me.
Also, on the small chance Black Panther wins Best Picture, let's just shut these things down and never have them again.
