What if instead of saying he would never replay a game he had said something like "I don't care about what happens in Vegas or sports betting around the world. I don't care at all about the financial transactions that have occurred because of this game. There was a flaw in the officiating and I am using my authority to order the game be replayed." How long until his car wouldn't work so good or some other "accident" would happen to him?

I think it'd be more likely that he'd be pressured out of his role in rapid time.

If we start replaying games because of game altering calls I think only about 20% of all games would ever be completed.
And I'm including soccer, baseball and basketball in that number.

You forgot logistics. Lets just put aside the stadium stuff like security,concessions and people going back to the game aside. In this case, the Rams would have to fly half way across the country to play a few minutes. That would never happen. Also how would you replicate the fatigue both sides had at the time. Now you could just replay the game but that opens up a whole other can of shitworms. You won't get the same game, it might be a blowout on one side. Then, again, the fatigue element creeps in. Assuming the league can get the game in order in time, the winner will lose rest time before the Super Bowl, creating an unfair advantage. Bad calls are just a part of sports and we just have to deal with it. |

That said, I think its an older rule from an era where there weren't PR reprecussions. That said, as a Rams fan, the Saints fans are being irrational. Let's replay our Week 9 game where we were robbed a first down by the same crew on Zuerlein's Fake Field Goal. |

So that means something like a fan running on the field and tackling a player in the open field on the last play of the game, or some sort of natural disaster occurring during the course of the game. It doesn't, nor should it ever, mean "the commissioner can change the result of a game because fans are whining about one bad call." Is this really what we're going to be doing next as NFL fans? Petitioning the commissioner to enact Rule 17, Section 2, Article 1 any time the referee missed a holding call in the first quarter or called a questionable roughing the passer in the third quarter? Why have we as sports fans become such babies that we need court action to be taken any time our team loses? What's so wrong with accepting defeat and moving on? It was a bad call. Bad calls happen. The Saints got the ball to start overtime in the NFC Championship Game and Drew Brees threw a bad interception, then the Saints defense let Tyler Higbee pick up 18 yards on the ensuing drive. THAT cost the Saints the game, not a missed pass interference. |

Horrific calls happen and it’s frustrating but nah replaying games is out the option

On the first down play in that series Brees threw an incomplete pass which stopped the clock. If they run on all three downs there is not enough time for the Rams to tie the game.
In the first quarter the Rams turned the ball over deep in their own territory and the Saints could only come up with a field goal.Instead of a three possession game it's a two possession game.
In overtime if the Saints receiver stays with the play and doesn't throw his hands in the air and starts toward the ref there is no way the Rams defender intercepts that pass.
The refs didn't screw the Saints. The Saints screwed the Saints.

If any game was ever going to be replayed due to ref incompetence, it would've been that infamous Packers vs. Seahawks game with the replacement refs a few years back. The replay rule only exists for overwhelmingly extraordinary circumstances, not a botched penalty call.
IMO, as horrible as that non-call was, it was also negated by Drew Brees throwing a pick the very first possession of OT. Saints were still in a position to win and set things straight, and they shot themselves in the foot.
Where Goodell messed up is, once again, being completely unaware or indifferent to how public relations work. Day after the game, he should've held a short press conference saying like "There was indeed a missed pass interference call that if called, would've put the Saints in the position to win the game. And Saints players and fans have every right to feel frustrated and disappointed with the result of the game. While the decision of the game is final and cannot be altered or replayed, I will ask that the Competition Committee discuss solutions during their meetings to ensure something like this won't happen again to another team in the future."
