Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today in memory of another football league gone too soon: The Alliance of American Football. A league that had high hopes and positive vibes when it was first announced. A league that many had hoped would become the thing that filled the void for football fans between February and August (even though there are a number of leagues that play indoors. Look 'em up. There might be one near you).
But, like many fallen leagues before it, there were fatal flaws that killed the AAF: Incompetent Management and Poor Budgeting, to name a couple. Because when you have to get a bailout from the owner of the Carolina Hurricanes and your best team has to travel out of state for practice due to insurance laws, you know there are deeper problems.
But alas, nearly a week after its premature demise, we look back and ask: Did the wheels come off the rails? Or was it a trainwreck from the word go, and nobody noticed, or just ignored it?
So, we pour one out for the AAF. Another league done in by its own stupidity. The Football Gods show no mercy. Amen.

Honestly this janky ass league deserves to die. Pretty sure this was a scam.

The more that comes out the more it's pretty obvious that the league rushed football operations to beat Vince to the punch. There are a lot of articles coming out that says that is not true, but literally everything points to AAF rushing. It also seems like Polian and Ebersole were convinced that the NFL would jump right in to making AAF the official developmental league but that wasn't going to happen anytime soon.
I do think there is a market for spring football, but you can't jump in head first. I was entertained by the league and football was improving but that first month it was obvious they were not ready to play

AAF has gone into BS mode. They're fine with players being signed by the NFL, but not the CFL. Talk about your insecurities.

I mean, just sign them anyway. AAF can't even make payroll, you think they're gonna be able to pony up legal fees for a lengthy process?

The sad part is hearing about the fallout with the players. One example, Memphis' team came back to their hotel to find all their belongings had been stacked in the lobby because the team management failed to pay the hotel. And the players who got injured are now stuck footing all the medical bills and rehab on their own. And if a team of current sports team owners is failing its players this badly, the warning is there for them to avoid the XFL like the plague. www.foxbusiness.com/features/aaf-players-booted-from-hotels-left-to-pay-medical-costs-out-of-pocket-report

League has a domestic player rule and the good Americans who already play in the league make more than what the AAF was offering. There was never really any incentive for a player to choose the AAF over the CFL in the first place

I still can't believe CBS partnered with them to air their games, which I think ended up being one game on CBS Prime when the league launched, and the plan was they were going to run the championship game until the league folded.

Panthers and Steelers absolutely collecting on that free agency there.
Also, really glad the Browns picked up Garrett Gilbert. Him and Mayfield, along with OBJ hitting his prime, might finally make them killer on offense, after they were arguably screwed out of a playoff place only by Refball last year

The AAF shouldn't be used as a comparison to the XFL because we know that the AAF was simply started when it did to just beat Vince but ended up beating themselves.
