What baffles me is that people genuinely actuly believed wrestling was real in the 70s. I'd hazard a guess that far more people were aware it was fake in those days than we give them credit for. Some fans would attempt to attack heels well into the 1980s. I remember Maria Kanellis saying Johnny Jeter had that kind of heat in OVW where people in the crowd seemed to get legitimately angry at his heel work. So I live in Louisville now, and have gone to a handful of the TV tapings. It’s like going into a time machine. Tickets and concessions are dirt-cheap, and most of the people in the audience have been going to “the matches” for YEARS. And there are more than a few people who genuinely and earnestly believe they’re watching real sports. I heard a lady behind me outright say “this and IWA is real, not like that fake WWE shit.” It cracked me up, because everything was kind of poorly worked and looked fake.

I think Cornette mentioned that he went to a convention on one of those small Louisville towns and a fan asked him if wrestling was fake because he watched a documentary...this happened in 2017.

This will probably sound like hair-splitting, but I always felt "fake" was the wrong term for it anyways. "Scripted" or "acted" or even "fictional" is probably a more accurate depiction. Wrestling is no different then any other fictional theater, yet if a person says that they like The Avengers movies, nobody turns around and says "you know they're fake, right?".

Wrestling on the other hand had conmen taking liberties with people just because they were trying to protect diz bizness

The Knoxville/Southeastern subsection of the Kayfabe Memories message board has a thread about this video that was started in December 2017. Any reason why it's suddenly being discussed now?

Louisville is a weird wrestling town. I mean really weird. You still have OVW, which is the lone holdout of the old school small arena/studio show with a few fans and the announce table. That's where you get some of the people Dork refers to. But then you get the oddball crowds like the ROH shows I went to, which were kind of a redneck smark sort of crowd, if that's possible. As in they get hyped and rabid like old school fans, but are smart to what's going on. I'm talking people who never bought into Austin being Stone Cold because they were too familiar with him as Stunning Steve, but would know the inner workings of TNA and knew Doc Gallows had been released and would not be the Destination X show.
Now WWE crowds? They're pretty normal. Families and what not. The TNA crowds at the promotion's peak were a mix of some families and the weirdo fans. ROH was almost totally the weirdos. OVW the rednecks who still believe everything. I always thought ECW could have made inroads here had they ever had a show here, but the one Louisville Gardens show they tried to book was cancelled or something.
As far as the Jeter stuff in OVW, he did some crazy heel antics that got him some mega heat. The angle with Cappotelli where he beat him bloody with a chair and announcer Dean Hill was trying to help and got the blood all over his white shirt. That was awesome.

A lot of old-timers (Hogan) couldn't tell you the truth at gunpoint.

To this day Greg Gagne still says with a straight face, that he and Verne were gonna start the ufc or lying about why he got fired from the wwe. Or Bill Watts claiming that he was the toughest man ever when in reality he had to bring a gun with him to work because Scott Steiner was gonna beat the f*** out of him. They’re just circus performers.

Maybe it's just where I listen to a lot of Cornette and Lapsed Fan that talks about the old days, but whenever there's scuttlebutt about a sex tape or who's screwing who or a DUI with the current talent, I just think to myself "That's it?"

I really hope that those follow up parts exposing blood, drugs, payoffs etc exist too.
