So his theme came on my iPod last night while on a road trip and I was reminded of him. Like I forgot about this. How’d it start? How’d it end? Anyone mock him? Anyone rip his dress off mid match?

It started with SmackDown lower careers of the day going up to Nunzio saying “Hey, I saw Vito the other day wearing a dress”. Then he showed up to SmackDown one week wearing a dress. He did that until he just stopped showing up and got released, except for being a lumberjack at WM23 dressed in full Muay Thai kickboxer attire.

Back then it was pretty damn progressive..except for JBL’s commentary. And the guy got it over somewhat as well.

I thought it was brilliant.
He was taken seriously for the most part and it wasn’t like a “HAHA HES GAY!” kinda thing.

It started as a punishment and he just owned it completely. Fans started turning up in dresses and he was weirdly over.

I remember it being quite entertaining and wasn’t he supposed to get a World Title match with King Booker on Smackdown before it was scrapped? I think after that he didn’t do much if memory serves me.

I remember Kennedy beating him down and taking his dress off in a match in early 2007 on Smackdown and that was it for him.

I remember hearing the dress was his idea. He figured it would make him stand out and keep him employed.

I wonder if the gimmick was inspired in any way from the Vito character in Sopranos who was caught in a gay night club dancing with another man. It seemed like the Vito dress gimmick happened shortly after that Sopranos episode aired. At the time, Sopranos was one of the biggest shows on tv.

And of course, he teabagged his opponent as a finisher.

I think after that he didn’t do much if memory serves me. I don't know if it was a title match but it was supposed to be the main event of the first SD on the brand new CW and it got changed to King Booker vs. The Undertaker in a non-title match instead (with Mr. Kennedy on commentary as he was supposed to face Undertaker at No Mercy). Undertaker won by DQ and then Tombstoned King Booker after Lashley tossed Booker back in the ring when the latter tried to make a break for it.

He got a decent push with it. I remember him having a decent winning streak.

He made it work. Dude always had a decent amount of charisma. It was cool to see him do something outside of a pseudo-mafia group.

Well, Vince Russo and Vito actually do a podcast together and according to them, it was done to embarrass Vito for being close with Russo. Vito put a lot of effort and work into the gimmick and ended up getting it over. Again, these are their words.

Vito : "I am disabled by CTE and will sue yet I still get booked and wrestle." Among other things he stretched the truth on.

I loved it. He was treated as a threat and the crowds were unexpectedly progressive. Wish he could have stuck around longer even if just as an enhancement talent.

I didn’t watch SD a whole lot, back then. But I seem to remember him being really over during this period.

He was pretty entertaining with it. Think he even ended up in Playgirl at one point.

I remember he wrestled at a Smackdown taping I went to during that time period and they aired a vignette of him shopping for dresses at a local K-Mart. Only the best for Vito.
And I remember him being a Cruiserweight in the Smackdown game that came out, and not having the dress in it either.
But yeah it was a pretty fun gimmick all things considered. He was just a dude that enjoyed wearing dresses and kicking ass in them.
