2019 has been such a train wreck of a year for video games.

None of these issues are enough to dissuade me from picking up one of them for my kids, and I'm sure I'll play it too. BUT that's maybe because I don't quite understand a lot of this. I haven't personally played a Pokemon since Emerald and before that was Red. So I don't get a majority of the problems because I have no damn clue what most of it means. I'm as casual as it comes here I guess.
Now my kids started with OR/AS when I picked those up for them and then Sun/Moon and the oldest downloaded Blue a ways back. Dunno how they'd feel about any of these things but, meh. Even if they don't care for it my youngest will be happy I'm sure, this'll be his first Pokemon game.
Are any of these problems not something they can start patching out? Maybe they can fix these things to make the playerbase happier here? Or is this one of those wishful thinking things and there won't be improvement until a pseudo remake/sequel/special-edition dealy happens?

With the results of the data miners we’ve learned a lot of these issues are baked directly into the game’s code. Making it extremely difficult to simply patch them. Now that’s not to say all the issues can’t be patched just, well, they likely won’t see it being financially worth it to do the deep dive reworking of the game at a foundational level to fix everything. We’ll literally have to wait for the next game and hope to see if they fixed the issues. Because we know for a fact that they reuse the base code of games a lot(like this game is just Sun & Moon at the very bottom of its code), so if they are ever going to go in and actually fix these things it’ll at that point.

The more significant element is that it there's a pattern of questionable decisions for Sword/Shield which paints dubious picture of GameFreak's priorities for development, and makes moves like the National Dex cut look even worse. Its not so much the technical problems as it is there's decreasing trust in the company's competence and/or ability to be truthful about games going forward.

I think the real shit storm is going to happen if it turns out there's truth to the theory that they scrubbed out the GTS so that they can sell it to you in Home. There's no justification for that at all beyond just straight up trying to milk players for more money, though I've seen some people going, "Well, without a full Pokedex what use does a GTS have?"
I have seen the slightly more reasonable point that it could be to prevent people from trading with themselves on different profiles but I really don't see how that's supposed to be a bad thing anyway.

Game opened to an 81 on Metacritic, which given Gamefreak was very selective in who they gave review copies to is... probably not great since even with that advantage it's already the lowest rated main series game besides Black & White 2 (which baffles me given it's probably the best one) and Emerald, and it's not really handily beating either.

2019 has been such a train wreck of a year for video games. ...i thought it had some awesome games. Sure it has the EA and lootbox fiasco, epic games(but I think they started the exclusive thing in 2018 anyway?).

I mean it is a good game, I think trying to deny that is silly. It just should been much better and more evolved than what it is right now.

Okay, one genuinely good bit of thinking ahead - turns out the game's specifically programmed to prevent overleveled Pokemon from ever being shiny. So that'll spare a lot of headaches.

There are fixable issues. But many are fundamental design issues. But people have to accept the national dex is never ever returning. You can't keep it going ,you may want to but it is impossible. It is still great, visually it is a leap, the presentation is great, the music and mood is top notch, the rivals are really fun. me I'm just tired of the gen 1 and the status quo of the game but it is very likely the best pokemon game(Short of HGSS ).

No one's sure of the cause yet - it may be a regional thing - but the digital version is corrupting some people's SD cards.

Imagine if other companies released two versions of games. Like if 2K released WWE Raw and WWE Smackdown and you had to trade wrestlers between them and oh shit I've just given WWE more ideas............

That was something that happened semi-frequently with Capcom-made handheld GBC/GBA games, at least for a time. The Oracle games (Zelda: Oracle of Ages/Seasons), the later Battle Network games... okay, maybe just them off the top of my head... Still, I can see the Powers That Be trying to squeeze every last nickel out of the WWE 2K games. And it'll be your fault. You monster.

I'm quickly developing a huge fondness for winning absurd mismatches in the Wild Area. Shame that I probably won't top the one that just happened, beating a level 50 Corviknight using nothing but a level 23 Raboot.
It kept spamming Swagger which is how that happened.

I'm loving it so far, having a UK based region is wonderful and I love seeing words like "mate" and "gutted" appear in the dialogue.

Sword & Shield is officially one of the best Pokemon games around for one simple reason.
Thanks to the Max Raid Battles in the Wild Area, I already have an Axew. I don’t even have a single badge yet.
Do you have any idea how long I’ve wanted a Pokemon game with early game Dragon-types?!
