It's still worth it for them... Dodgers can't keep cutting it close, every year they acquire a star player and fall flat They have to do this but they better be prepared for the shit storm coming if they miss the WS because it is WS or bust I think it's worth the risk for the Dodgers. You're right that it doesn't guarantee them anything, but even if they fall flat again it won't really jeopardize them long term. Verdugo was a luxury for them, and Price/Maeda is probably a wash (or possibly a slight upgrade if Price stays healthy). All they can do is add as many wins as possible to the 2020 team. After that, the playoffs are a crapshoot. With the Astros likely on their best behavior from a cheating standpoint, it's a wide open field now.

The price they paid makes this whole thing worthwhile Mookie is an upgrade over Joc, Price/Maeda is a wash at Price current level, losing Verdugo but still keeping May is a big win Dodgers are still in a position to make another big move if they wanted but they didn't bet the farm on this move which is the most important thing. They have to eat a few years of Price contract but considering they got Kershaw too, the hope is both guys can tap into their vintage selves for stretches

Angels low key got hitters now too
Trout, Joc, Rendon, Upton, Ohtani, Simmons and even old ass Pujols
They going to have to hope for 5 runs a night because the pitching isn't really great

Sorry if it seems like I'm rambling here. Still trying to process this.
This sucks. It was apparent that this was coming for a long time and no matter how it turned out it was always going to suck. I loved watching Mookie play and the fact that the Sox feel like they move a possible future Hall of Famer in his prime is extremely fustrating.
And I don't blame Sox fans for being outraged right now. After coming off a disappointing year the Sox have added nothing while slashing payroll. There are still holes to be filled and now they lose their best player and one of their better pitchers. On top of that they're still dealing with the fallout of a major scandal that cost them thier manager (which they still haven't replaced a week away from spring training), will probably cost them much needed draft picks and has given the organization a huge black eye. Oh, and they raised ticket prices too. Way to read the room guys! So things are kind of a hot mess right now.
Still I feel it needed to to be done. Betts had made it crystal clear he was going to test the market no matter what they offered. And you can't risk him walking out for nothing but a draft pick. That's the man reason why this happened. Getting under the Luxury Tax was secondary.
But they needed to get under the Luxury Tax too. Contrary to what some critics say the Red Sox ownership aren't cheap. They've outspent everyone the past few seasons. But the longer you spend over the tax the more the penalties pile up. Not just money either. Draft picks, compensation and a lot of things are affected by the tax. That's why even the big spenders like the Yankees and Dodgers try to sty under the tax.
I'm not going to let the Sox's owners completely off the hook however. While they haven't been cheap they spent poorly. They knew that this was coming and they still allowed Dave Dombrowski to talk them into foolish extensions for Sale and Evoaldi. And why is JBJ still on the team?
As for the return it's ok I guess. You were never going to get an organization's top prospects for a one year rental, even for a player like Mookie. Teams are smarter now. And Graterol is already the Sox's top prospect right now. That's how bad the Sox's system is right now.
Part of me wonders if the Sox would have gotten better propects if they just traded Mookie instead of tying David Price to the deal. If I had a choice between better propects and dumping Price's salary I would take the propects. But I guess the Sox really wanted to rid themselves of Price. He had a great postseason run in 2018 but overall he never was the pitcher the Sox were hoping for when they signed him. On top of that he was a divisive figure who never really liked it here and the Sox probably didn't want him influencing the clubhouse.
2020 is going to SUCK!!! But hopefully the Sox can play thier cards right and start building the next great Sox team.

2013 Red Sox was every single journeyman player on that team having a career year at the same time. It was so weird.

As a yankee fan i laugh at the Betts trade but yall are acting like getting rid of Betts and Price suddenly make the Sox on the level of Baltimore. They'll be fine probably win around 85-90 games and fight for a WC slot. And nothing says they cant break the bank next season sign Betts like the Yankees did with Chapman. All of this is an overreaction by all fans, let's see how this pans out first before we get pitchforks and torches. Nothing says Dodgers will win, and sox will be crap.
But f*** billionaire owners crying poor over these taxes, you dont think they know how to make their money stretch and grow? This is just greed from the Smaugs of society wanting more gold and wanting us to think they dont have enough and that we should feel bad for the poor poor billionaires

Some slight optimism on the Mets: It’s almost impossible to have optimism with the Mets and this is the Wilpons so I doubt they call Cohen back

Betts is on a HOF path and is only 27. For a team with the resources that Boston has I can understand why fans are upset. He was one of their best homegrown players ever. That’s the player you lock up while trying to move the bad contracts, though granted moving some of the Dombrowski mistakes would not be easy.
I think the Sox are still a solid team but their farm system is beyond shit and not a lot of trade assets on the roster. It’s going to be hard for them to maintain competitiveness while rebuilding like the Yankees did in the mid 2010’s.

It’s not likely to happen but Sox will have the same shot at signing Mookie in 2021 as anybody else. He’s going to be a free agent no matter how much he loves LA, if he loves LA.

First bit of bad news for the Yankees tho good for Paxton
He's out 3-4 months after having a Cyst removed
Rotation still has Cole, Tanaka, Sevy with Happ looking like he will slot in.

Despite being announced almost 48 hours ago, the trade that would send Mookie Betts and David Price to the Dodgers has not been finalized, because of medical issues with pitcher Brusdar Graterol, according to Ken Rosenthal. So, just so we're clear here, the Red Sox traded Mookie Betts, the second-best player in baseball and arguably the Red Sox' best player since Carl Yastrzemski, for an outfielder with back problems (and off-field red flags) and a pitcher with arm concerns. I'm still pissed at John Henry for ordering this trade because he had to buy another yacht or sink more money into the Boston Globe or Liverpool FC or whatever, but I'm starting to get really annoyed at Chaim Bloom, who could not have whiffed any harder on his first trade with the Red Sox. Also... A young outfielder who's already dealing with back problems? Sign me the f**k up, Red Sox management. I can't wait to see which pitching prospect dealing with UCL problems they're acquiring, as well. Dammit, I hate being right about this.

Just saw. Mets sale officially called off However, one former Mets employee told The Post that it was almost inconceivable to think that a deal would have been struck without a role for Jeff. “This guy has never done anything in his life other than play a week of minor league baseball and work for his dad,” said the former Mets staffer. “The Mets are his life. He can’t do anything else.” Yup, we're f***ed. A rich son of a bitch with no real skills. A New York specialty.

Heyman tweeted that the Betts trade is "not a certainity".
Team wants to get rid of star because they "can't afford him" followed by a trade breaking down. Congrats Boston, you are the AL Mets.

The Dodgers and Red Sox can’t afford for the deal to not go through, so I’m sure they’ll come up with something. The Twins probably wouldn’t lose sleep over it.
