Giants about to sign Hunter Pence again and have interest in Puig.
At least that would keep things interesting. Puig would be the Giants best hitter since their World Series runs. Lmao

It doesn't look like the Twins or Dodgers are budging so the Sox have two options. Reject the deal, remain hamstrung by the luxury tax, piss off the Twins, Dodgers & Angels, deal with an even moodier David Price who may be even tougher to move, deal with Mookie and his teammates being asked about his free agency every day and risk losing Mookie for nothing but a draft pick. Or Accept the deal as is, which 95% of the fanbase hates, despite the fact that they just admitted they are not getting what they thought and look like schmucks. Wonderful position they're in right now.

The Giants might just lose 150 games this year*, but I still have the biggest grin because they decided to bring back Pablo and Pence. Gotta keep the fans happy with favorites while the rebuild is underway.
*maybe a small exaggeration

Wonderful position they're in right now. They’ll be World Series contenders in two years Their farm system is ass (arguably the worst in baseball), they have big unmovable contracts attached to players likely to decline (Sale in particular), and are about to trade a generational player in his 20’s. I don’t think they’ll be bad at any point, but WS contender is probably pushing it. The Yankees and Rays are not going anywhere any time soon, and the Blue Jays are going to trend upwards as early as 2020 (but more likely 2021). The Sox might be in for a multi year retool/rebuild.

I gotta ask why make this trade now? Wont this trade be available at the deadline? At least if you wait you can find a needy team willing to take on players for a playoff push. If Price is having a decent season you cant tell me some team in a dog fight for the division or WC that needs pitching wont take a chance. Or that another team might want Mookie to help lead a lineup. Just seems silly to make this trade in February when the players the sox will be getting will surely be available in July

Yep, the Yankees still have a loaded system and young players at the Major League level. The Rays always have a damn good farm system. And the Jays have rebuilt themselves. I gotta ask why make this trade now? Wont this trade be available at the deadline? At least if you wait you can find a needy team willing to take on players for a playoff push. Just seems silly to make this trade in February when the players the sox will be getting will surely be available in July But in July, Mookie would only have half of a season to play for the team. That takes his value down, unless somebody is absolutely 100% convinced that he's the missing piece (like the Cubs trading for Chapman). So his price could really go down.

Just seems silly to make this trade in February when the players the sox will be getting will surely be available in July What if the Sox are in contention for a playoff spot? Then there would be pressure to hold on to him. Or what if, God forbid, Mookie gets hurt and the Sox can't move him? As for Price it's just as likely that his value would go down. He's already 34, missed time with several ailments over the past 3 years and is coming off an injury that sidelined him for the last 2 months. And he's owed a ton of money. The only reason the Dodgers were willing to take him even with the Sox eating half his money was that the Dodgers were getting Mookie. On top of that if he makes it through the season on the Sox he becomes a 10/5 guy and is even harder to move. Not to mention he's an insufferable a**hole and is the most hated athlete in Boston not named Kyrie. On top of all that even if the Sox were able to move Mookie and/or Price they would still have been over 208 Million for 2020 and have to pay the Luxury Tax, putting off the reset until at least 2021. Hindsight being 20/20 the best time to move Mookie would have been at last year's trading deadline. The Sox were on the fringes of contention and teams probably would have been more willing to move prospects in exchange of a year and a half control. But they didn't, the Sox collapsed and here we are.

Even if they aren't contenders this year, I think the Blue Jays will be that annoying team the contending teams don't want to face, especially in Toronto. They're some development and some pitchers away from being true contenders though and I think that can happen as early as 2021.

Sox should just take it as a sign from above that Mookie wasn’t meant to be traded.
Give him $40 per for 8.
You could do a lot worse than a middle of the lineup consisting of Betts, Devers and Boegarts

Passan says the Betts trade is agreed upon, with Dodgers sending Verdugo and Jeter Downs. Per ESPN's Jeff Passan, the deal is Betts and Price for outfielder Alex Verdugo, infielder Jeter Downs, and catcher Connor Wong. It's still a total fleecing and knowing the incompetent dips***ts in Red Sox management, Jeter Downs will end up having some long-eradicated illness like rinderpest while Connor Wong will actually just be two children stacked on top of each other in a trench coat and catcher's mask. Please, John Henry, if you couldn't afford to pay Mookie Betts the salary he deserves, just sell the damn team. Go focus on the Boston Globe and Liverpool FC and your NASCAR team and let someone who actually cares about the Red Sox' on-field product take over. Because what's stopping him from doing this to Xander Bogaerts in 2026 or Rafael Devers in 2023? They're bound to want a pay raise, so it'll be time to sell them for pennies on the dollar, and we can't have that in Boston. No, no, this is all about cost control and pinching every last penny. The Red Sox are about to deserve the 75-win season and swaths of empty seats this coming summer.

The deal appears to be: Dodgers get: OF Mookie Betts, P David Price, Cash (from Bos)/ P Brusdar Graterol, 2020 Comp B Draft Pick (from Min) Red Sox get: OF Alex Verdugo, SS Jeter Downs & C Connor Wong (from LA) Twins get: P Kenta Maeda, Cash (from LA) I'll give credit to Chaim he stuck to his guns and looks like he got a better deal. Still would have liked to get a pitcher and I have serious questions about Verdugo's character but he appears to have gotten two players with a lot of upside. Of course no one truly knows how propects turn out. And yes, I'm aware I'm going to be rooting for a Shortstop named Jeter

He deserves $400 million and if we're being totally honest, $400 million for a player of his caliber is a bargain. He's the second-best player in the game right now and arguably the best player the Red Sox have had in about 60 years. And also, according to Fangraphs (https://blogs.fangraphs.com/what-alex-rodriguezs-contract-would-look-like-today/), adjusting for inflation, if Alex Rodriguez's 2001 $252 million contract existed today, he would have been paid something in the neighborhood of $59.5 million annually. Baseball realistically should have had several $40 million and at least one $50 million contract by now, and by every metric, Betts would be worth every penny of a $400 million contract.

Mookie wanted to test free agency, if he wanted to be there he would have worked it out, it is that simple

Yea, that is homer talk Here's Mookie Betts' WAR rankings since he broke into the bigs in 2015: 19, 2, 13, 1, 12. He's been inarguably one of the very best players in the game year-in and year-out. The Red Sox are going to rue this day for a long time, trust me. You draft players in the hope that they're going to grow to become Mookie Betts. You trade prospects for established talent like Mookie Betts. You shell out huge money for a player like Mookie Betts. What you definitely don't do is trade someone like Mookie Betts for about eight cents on the dollar.
