As a performer, I'd describe Cody as a slightly more charismatic and versatile Dolph Ziggler, or maybe a blander John Morrison with better mic skills. There's really no one more fitting to compare him to than other mid-'00s WWE upper midcarders who felt like they might develop into stars and never quite made it, because he's absolutely part of that generation, with very little to distinguish him from his peers. But as a promoter? He's fantastic, and he's turned into one of the biggest game-changers in wrestling in years. Even if AEW implodes and never really expands beyond ROH-level, the amount of excitement and interest he's managed to generate in himself and his cohorts already is reshaping the entire US indie scene. Ok I have a question, let’s say that Nick or Matt get injured for Double or Nothing, can Cody still sell it out? With him in the main event, not Omega and not Jericho, I’m talking Cody being responsible for selling it out. At this stage, I think the hype behind AEW is moving beyond any of the individual performers and building off the aura that this is finally the new WCW-esque serious competitor for WWE that's going to shake pro wrestling out of its complacent rut.

I’ve never had much of an issue with Cody in the ring. He doesn’t work at the aggressive pace some of his peers these days do, but he does have a decent move set and his selling and character work IMO are top tier. (I feel like I’m one of the few who really enjoyed the matches he had with Omega and his Nick Aldis stuff ruled.)
The legacy (no pun intended) he’s developing outside of the ring is even more significant, but as a performer I don’t have much to complain about. Even if he’s not putting on match of the night candidates, he’s still an incredibly athletic and charismatic wrestler.

He really combined the "work smart" and "work hard" from a business perspective like not a lot of people have. He might have the Rhodes name but out on the indies that was not really going to matter. When he left WWE, there wasn't a ton of hype behind him and he had to create a lot of his own hype. The checklist he came up with was a great idea and he did a great job of avoiding that ex-WWE guy on the indies vibe that so many midcarders getting released have.
The fascinating part is that he never really delivered match quality wise when it got to that point. His matches on the indies were meh, his run in NJPW was absolutely horrendous but he has gotten people to care about him and at the end of the day that's the goal. It helps that hes a good promo and has a hell of a lot of personality.

Legit, my favorite Cody thing, is that clapping guy gif. I don't hate Cody, but, I'm not marking AEW on my calendar, either. I hope that he does have success.
