Not counting if you moved, or your city does not have a team, or your team has been eliminated, or even if you are cheering for a team that your parents liked.
I mean cheering for a team like Golden State, the Pats, or the Yanks when you have no connection to any of those areas AND your city has a team is such a cop out.

I am a White Sox fan. I live in NY, and have never been to Chicago. Before that, I was a Royals fan because Bo Jackson played for them before deciding to follow the Sox on a whim. I'm also a Anaheim Ducks fan, been one since they founded the team because I was a huge Mighty Ducks fan. That movie started my love of hockey in general.
I understand your point on people bandwagoning to successful teams, it is valid, but please remember that just because you live in an area doesn't mean you have to follow, or even like, the local team.

I don’t see it as so. If you carry on supporting that team by whatever means, watching games, buying merchandise/kits then you’re not “copping out”.
When I was a kid growing up in the south of England I would get shit for supporting Liverpool. Even though I did have a family connection to the city (they moved away when I was really young) that wasn’t good enough and was constantly told I should be supporting nearer clubs like Arsenal, Tottenham etc. Although most of the fans of those teams weren’t actually from that area either but because it was closer, it was deemed more acceptable. Didn’t help that Liverpool were (just about) the most successful team at that period.
I don’t put that much into calling fans of successful teams “glory hunters”. As long as you support that team through both the success and the lack of it, then it’s fine with me. I’ve seen friends of mine who have supported Chelsea for thirty years called “plastic” because Chelsea have had a lot of success this century, even though those friends were still supporting when Chelsea were shit. Any successful team will gain fans. It’s what a lot of kids do here, they will cheer for the bigger teams. As long as they continue to stick with that team, then there’s no issue.

I grew up in NJ and now live in Ohio. I’m a fan of the Nationals, Capitals, Chargers and Magic.

I'm more of a fan of players than I am of whole teams. Wasn't a Nats or Phillies fan, but I love watching Harper. Not a big cards fan, but I'm a Carpenter fan.
I'm a big fan of the history of the Yankees, so I like when they're doing well. I'll cheer for the Vikings because they were my nana's favorite team growing up.
So, if my teams are out of it, I'll pull for whatever team has the most players I like.
I also had an Indians hat when I was a kid because I loved Jim Thome. And I'm from about 45 minutes outside of Pittsburgh.

Living in the DC area, I'm a Blue Jays fan (baseball), Sharks fan (hockey), Raptors fan (basketball), Panthers fan (football), and Gators fan (college sports). Never lived in those areas, I just chose those teams early on in my life and stuck to them.

I'm spite rooting for the Cleveland Browns because Odell Beckham got traded there by my original team's idiot GM.

My area only has two minor league teams.
And I hate both of them.

I've always liked the Indianapolis Colts. I liked their colors when I played the games so I latched onto them.

On another note, I always liked the Houston Astros because my little league baseball team was the Astros.

I have no issue with people liking a team from a different area if it happened naturally. I just hate how people switch their favorite teams because of championships, hype, or the wind blowing.

I live in KC where there's no NHL hockey team, so part of me wants to cheer for the St. Louis Blues but I'm kind of mixed with the idea.

It's not like the majority of the players are actually from the city they play in anyway. Back in the '70s, my dad's friends used to give him crap for being a Steelers fan instead of a Cowboys fan, and he'd remind them that Pittsburgh had more players who were actually from Texas than Dallas did at the time.

I can like whatever team I want. I’m from Cincinnati... you expect me to stan the Reds and Bengals exclusively? C’mon, I wanna experience SOME happiness in my sporting entertainment.

I’m pretty much always going to cheer on Pop’s House of Misfit Toys in the NBA. Other than that, I tend to be a hometown kind of fan.

I'm a Ravens fan born and raised in Michigan. For whatever reason, when I started watching the NFL regularly in 2004, they were the team I was drawn to. Nobody can say I'm not a real fan of the team, I've been straight up devastated after some games over the years. lol
