It’s been mentioned in the motorsport thread but I think this deserves its own thread. Quite simply, one of the greatest drivers to ever walk the planet and possibly the greatest when it came to understanding the mechanics of a race car. It’s a miracle that he survived one of the most horrific crashes ever at the Nurburgring but he came back and raced less than six weeks later. He had a desire to win that not many have even come close to. If you haven’t seen it, check out the film Rush. It’s about the rivalry between him and James Hunt and it’s one of the best films of the decade IMO. A legend of sport. RIP link

Absolutely gutted by this news One of F1's finest.. To not only survive but come back and race from that scary crash at the Nurburgring in 1976..The guy is an absolute legend. Rest in Peace. Not the kind of news I want to wake up to.

Absolute hero, RIP. His legacy in motor racing and in what was such a dangerous time to be in the sport will never be forgotten.

With his recent health issues, it kind of felt like he may not have long left but it is still sad news indeed. A true legend of motorsport who by all rights should not have survived that crash, never mind coming back so quickly and winning again. Whenever they talked to him at races in recent years, you knew he was going to say what he was thinking without trying to spin it. From the BBC Obituary: It's impossible to imagine anybody doing anything like that today.
