I think he would’ve been a big star whether he was in The Shield or not. And a decent chance he’d have been even more successful.

Wasn't there a rumor, before he debuted with The Shield and when we were even doubting his existence, they were going to bring him in as AJ Lee's boyfriend or was that just made up?

The reunions hindered all three of them. Roman can't get a positive reaction unless it's part of The Shield, they keep cooling down Seth to prop up Roman, and Ambrose was always cast as the third wheel.
The original run? Awesome stuff. Reunions? Not so much.

In the same way Evolution was utterly detrimental to Batista.

Honestly the only negative about the first run is that they had such limited time that they got to be faces before the breakup.

I heard that, too. It was going to be from when Daniel Bryan and AJ Lee had their wedding on RAW 1000, but it was going to be a trap set by Bryan to send Lee to the nuthouse. She was going to come back and Dean Ambrose was going to be her new boyfriend that she met on the inside.

Hell no
Without the Shield he doesn't stand out early in his run. Add on, they positioned him as the leader very early on until Roman started to get the push but Dean was standing front and center
The stupid reruns, yes

The Shield were his one big hit single that he has to play every night even when it's grossly unrepresentative.
Without it, he never becomes world champion.

Nah. The Shield was a perfect combo and suited them all down to the ground. I seem to remember the thing that cost him as a singles guy was having to go and shoot that movie when he was at his hottest as a solo act. I think the thing that cost him as a singles guy was when they made him be Wacky Puns and Prop Gags Dean. It didn't fit his established personality. The fans didn't want to see him as that character. Plus he kind of half-assed the promos, because he didn't want to be that character either.
