How was he able to use "Billy Gunn" on their PPV? Isn't that a WWE trademark, if so, when did they gain the rights to it?
When he was in TNA, he was never Billy Gunn. He was either Kip James or The Outlaw.

He bought the trademark a few years ago when WWE's rights ran out on it.

SO what's the deal with Cody? Do you think he will ever be able to come with a deal with his last name?

It's disgusting how WWE won't let Cody use the Rhodes name. Obviously WWE only cared about Dusty when they could use him, bring him out for some silly skit or segment. I get WWE owns a ton of wrestling companies and names and rights but Dusty Rhodes is Dusty Rhodes, a legend that WWF didn't not make and his son deserves the rights he can get. If, big if of course, his son's company knocks WWE down a peg or two it will definitely be them getting just deserts.

He has said that he did, at 15 changing it to "Runnels Rhodes" but wants to simply be "Cody". I'd link to the tweet but he called someone a f***face.

I remember reading the rights will be up for sale for the merch rights to "Cody Rhodes", which is probably the final hurdle, anyway, later this year. Guessing he buys it then and that'll be that. I'm sure WWE could attempt to renew it, but given they would not do anything with it, and couldn't use his likeness just because they had the name, I don't think they'd do it even for the spite, especially if they would be tempting getting slapped on squatting on the rights. That is probably a thread they don't want tugging on for the potential precedent it could set if they were challenged on it.

They did something clever at Double or Nothing that might have made you think that. Justin Roberts introduced him as Cody w/ Brandi Rhodes but said it in a way to sound like Cody "with Brandi" Rhodes.

During Cody's initial "indy checklist" run after leaving the fed, weren't he and the Mrs. smartly billed as "Cody & Brandi Rhodes" (as opposed to Cody Rhodes and Brandi Rhodes, I suppose) since she never went by that name in WWE and scooped by the TM / IP?

They kind of did the same thing at DoN if I remember rightly “Cody with Brandi....Rhodes!!!!!””

Maybe, but like I pointed out, they *could* do it out of spite, then get spanked in court. WWE tends to only pick legal battles they have a prayer of winning, though.

If he doesn't want to use the Rhodes name, that's fine...but "The American Nightmare" Cody is one of the worst wrestling names I've ever heard.
