Seems like most top boxers have a shock defeat against an unheralded opponent, at some point. Complacency sets in, overconfidence and dismissing the other man. It's how he reacts to it that really matters. Remember watching Lennox Lewis lose to Hasim Rahman, via Rahman throwing the punch of his life. The rematch was pretty one sided for Lewis.

Joshua made a big mistake by trying to brawl with this dude.

People too caught up on how this dude looks. Fought a hell of a fight. The bigger deal to me is he had a sizable reach disadvantage, and still won. That's as crazy as any of this. He may be a great fighter but for the scores of older lapsed fans who remember when the heavyweight champion was THE MAN in all of sports, the fact that this guy looks like he just got off his couch and became Champ is perfectly symbolic of how far the sport has fallen. Being the fittest does not make you the champ The dude body, it is what it is but he is a competitive boxer and that's not all fat there if he's hurting people. Let's not act like this is some big disaster that set boxing back 10 years. In fact HW boxing is at its most exciting it has been in almost 20 years His win has brought more excitement than the Klitschko bros did over their dominate reign in boxing that f***ed up the HW division

He lost to Oliver McCall a couple of years before that too, which is often explained by him focusing on trying to get a fight with Riddick Bowe scheduled for after he beat McCall.

But, but muscles.
Who knew boxing fans were worse than wrestling fans?

I feel bad for the winner. Wins a big fight over the champion, and all anyone talks about is "DID YOU SEE HE'S FAT? IT'S THE FUNNIEST GODDAMN THING IN THE WHOLE WILD WORLD, A FAT GUY ACCOMPLISHING SOMETHING!"
It's a grosser look than he's got, I'll tell you that much.

After the initial shock, the joke wears thin but people are still going to drive it into the ground instead of actually analyzing why AJ lost

I’m not even making fun of Ruiz’s physique, but no champion fighter should ever lose to a guy like him, if nothing else they should easily be able to outcardio him and wear him down as carrying excess weight like that isn’t exactly conducive to having top notch cardio. Muhammad Ali would have just danced around him for a bunch of rounds until he was tired and then opened up on him. Tyson would have swarmed him with a nonstop onslaught of power punches and never let him get comfortable or rest. Clearly Joshua didn’t take this guy seriously at all and it showed in his performance dude definitely neglected his roadwork and likely round work.

You keep bringing up cardio like a big person doesn't have cardio AJ had no cardio and has never had cardio. Ruiz may be bigger than him but that doesn't mean he's going to get gassed because he is fat. Samoa Joe is a big dude but he can outcardio a bunch of guys on that roster because he has a good motor. Ruiz Jr has a good motor despite his physique while Joshua does not, it is really that simple. He wore him down and had enough power to hurt AJ because he doesn't have a strong chin meanwhile Ruiz Jr was still fresh in that round while AJ clearly was faded AJ isn't Ali or Tyson.

Cardio is not the reason Muhammad Ali would beat Andy Ruiz.

Clearly he isn’t Ali or Tyson, but any champion fighter should put the work in at all times. It’s more of an indictment of Joshua than anything, at the end of the day dude coasted because he thought that he could get away with it and it bit him. yes, big guys can have good cardio, but rarely do they have elite cardio, as there’s a difference, that’s why we so rarely see boxers, mma guys, or Olympic wrestlers carrying extra pounds like him and if we do they’re typically heavy handed looking for a quick finish. Now maybe Ruiz is a cardio freak, and props to him for the win, but in sports lower body fat means more fast twitch fibers, quicker reactions and movements, etc. Obviously Joshua had zero cardio. I train Muay Thai and yes, there are dudes way bigger than me that can outcardio me, but just from my own personal experience in dropping excess body fat my movements, reflexes, training, everything is better. I’d be willing to bet that Ruiz could be even better if he trimmed down a bit. Just my .02, maybe I’m wrong. 🤷♂️

Just my .02, maybe I’m wrong. 🤷♂️ AJ clearly coasted on this fight as this was his third opponent but i'm not giving him that excuse. He had a full training camp as opposed to Ruiz who took the fight on short notice with a month to train Cardio isn't just one equation of the fight though. Ruiz Jr just outclassed him, it is really that simple. AJ has been knocking dudes out and he couldn't do so against him. AJ has a weakness that Ruiz Jr was able to exploit and many boxers and analyst before him has pointed out. He doesn't get an excuse for his performance nor has he made one in losing Looking back at his fights against inferior competition Ruiz Jr is going at least 8 rounds. AJ didn't start doing that until Klitschiko and even then that was shakey. He has to do better because it is so far proving people right how he has been ducking Wilder and going for "soft fights"

What are the odds the rematch goes the way of Lewis/Rahman II?
