I just want to bring to the table the scenario of a power outage. DVDs don’t mean shit in this scenario. If your laptop, iPad, phone is charged up prior to the storm then you are good to go. That’s where streaming will always be clutch. All your favorites from Netflix, Hulu, Prime, pornhub, and YouTube are at your beckon call. Doesnt streaming eat up tons of battery power though? And you dont know how long the power will be out for, so you may end up with a dead device sooner than later.

Sometimes an outage will effect your Wi-Fi. Also, my laptop plays DVDs too. There could very easily be a scenario where my Wi-Fi is knocked out but I have my laptop battery charged. In this case it would be the exact opposite of the scenario you gave where I could still play a DVD on my laptop, but not access streaming. Also, not an outage, but pretty much boiling down to the same thing. I have had times where my laptop could not connect to the Wi-Fi when traveling and I just popped in a DVD instead. I tend to travel with this box set of Hammer films I have since it is like 20+ films and it is very easy to travel with.

I have Netflix and Hulu, but I also don't plan on giving up my physical collection any time soon, because I still ultimately want control over what I can watch.

Last 2 road trips I have taken I packed my laptop,a 2 terabyte external HD filled with movies and tv shows, plus my extra ROKU. Most hotels now got fast enough Internet to use the roku. But sometimes to save on cash we will crash at a cheap hotel and then just hook the laptop to the hotel tv and watch whatever i got on the drive. I use to travel with a bag full of dvds but after spending 2 years ripping most of my dvds to a HD I just now usually bring digital copies.

But when my power goes out, so does the internet. since the modem is powered with electricity

This thread has made me reevaluate my stance and now I want my physical collection back, which I will have to re-buy. Thanks, guys! Also, my wife is angered by the lot of you.

What's sad about this is that there are a lot of computers out there with no CD drive. I get that we're in an age where CDs and DVDs are bordering on extinction, but sometimes it's best to have physical copies at your disposal if something goes wrong. Hell, I've been buying more CDs lately than I had been in a few years. Not that I stopped, but I didn't do it as much, especially since I got a lot of my music from the library to rip them (I can still do that), but I seem to enjoy having the physical copy than just the music and I do play CDs while I write or do other things. I even play them on my TV with a built-in DVD player.

I started buying CDs again 2 years ago. Noticed how I was finding albums cheap at places like Dollar General and Family Dollar. So been slowly buying lots of stuff I either owned on cassette and never got on CD or stuff I had on CD and lost over the years.
The hard thing is trying to find a Cd case for my car that isn't a wallet. I have always hated CD wallets. Took me 1 year to find a big case that holds the CDs in their original cases.

Sometimes people chuckle at me for still buying albums on cd (especially if it's a band/artist I love - having a physical copy just feels right) and I feel like a broken record saying that a good part of the time, it's cheaper. Especially if it's used and in great condition. I've gotten multiple albums for a buck or two that way.

A lot of the stuff I like to watch (like obscure horror movies) isn't readily available of streaming platforms up here. I also like to collect horror movies because they make fun conversation pieces when I have company. I also still buy cds for the same reason.

I ordered my first ones for personal pleasure rather than as a gift or something of this year recently. I won two auctions on eBay. One for The Beast That Killed Women/The Monster of Camp Sunshine double feature and one for Space-Thing. Both DVDs are OOP things from Something Weird. Unfortunately the only conversations they tend to start for me is when my girlfriend comes across them then lectures me about what a weirdo I am.

Only problem with cds is that the only local place to buy new cds is Wal-Mart, and they're starting to phase out cds, and most of what they have isnt what I'm looking for anyway, so I pretty much have to buy digital (I could order them I suppose, but I'm kind of impatient and dont like to wait for something to come in the mail).

The last handful of new releases that I wanted, I got at Target. They're usually on sale, too, which helps. That may be an admittedly limited option. If you have a Target near you, of course.

I remember my sister saying something about how I should start using Spotify instead of buying CDs. I think it was when I bought Gwen Stefani's Christmas album and I ended up going with the CD version. I don't see myself crossing over to the other side when it comes to music. Hell, even when there is an album that is only available on iTunes or something, I see myself burning a CD out of it.
