Sitting here, looking at the back of my Jurassic World 2 4K blu ray. And it gives detailed info on the back on how to watch the movie, like step by step. 4K tv + UHD blu ray player + high speed hdmi cable = movie
When did this start? Because now that I think of it I have a tonne of movies explaining how to watch a movie. They didn’t do this on VHS. I just bought a CED player, which is legitimately complicated to use and there’s no instructions on the CED. When did movies studios just give up and assume we didn’t know how to function the product they were selling?

You could say it originally started way back in the beginning:

You could say it originally started way back in the beginning: (LANGUAGE WARNING) .....that video is incredible. I don’t know what’s better, the ridiculousness of the menu or the fact that James and Mike seem stoned as f*** and are just having fun.

I agree, especially on 4K discs.
HDR is confusing enough as it is, so it doesn't help that most studios put a sticker that describes it as "shinier and prettier colors" on the front of every box. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think you severely overestimate how many people don't know how to set these things up.
The old VCR blinking 12:00 joke has died off but its successors just haven't become funny yet.

You do have a valid point. My 65 year old parents can barely function their PVR, and their minds were blown when 2 months ago i set it up for their phones and iPads to get emails so they don’t need to use their computer anymore. And dad still has no f***ing clue how to watch YouTube videos on his brand new smart tv. He always just uses the iPad and the makes everyone gather around him

Since the very beginning, when they advertised the menus as a special feature. Menus with actual chapter breaks made it a deluxe edition.

well it makes sense with 4K blu-rays. when vhs was the norm, you didn't have three different formats that all looked basically the same but required specific players to work. with 4K, all they advertise in commercials is that its a sharper, clearer picture, not that you need a $500+ 4K tv and a $200+ 4K blu-ray player. you don't have the "fine print" instructions on the back, you're going to have a lot of pissed off customers who spend an extra $5-$10 for 4K copy only to get home and find out they can't use it because they don't have all the right equipment

Yeah, I have a feeling many people have difficulties, only because I've been told by Family Video cashiers that what I'm about to rent is a Blu-ray / 4K Blu-ray and will only work in a Blu-ray/4K player. The boxes you take home also have a sticker that says the same thing.
I have a feeling that, if it's company policy to warn people, then enough people saw a movie on the shelves, said "oh hey, it's here, I'll take it" only for it not to work on their old equipment.

Pop Tarts have step by step instructions on them. Products always assume consumers are stupid.

when I worked at Blockbuster and blurays/HD DVDs first came out, we had to ask every customer that rented them if they were aware they wouldn't play on a standard DVD player (to cutdown on returns/pissed off customers).

I do remember the first DVD player in my household seeming like a science fiction device, so maybe they weren’t far off.

I remember the first Blu-Ray player I purchased in 2008 only came with composite cables.

Eh, any attempt to inform a customer about the purchase they're about to make is a good thing in my book. It might seem obvious or silly to people who know about the various media formats, but there's plenty out there who don't and they're not stupid for it.
Frankly, I have a 4K tv and still am not sure what the f*** I can and can't play on it, HDR-wise.
