Bob Backlund snapped and won the WWF title at age 45. (Edge and Christian both recently turned 45.) Backlund looked well older then, even standing next to his 40+ age cohort Ric Flair in the 1993 Royal Rumble. He's aged incredibly well!
For proof, Greg Valentine and Larry Zbyszko are both two years younger than Mr. Backlund!
On the flipside, Bob lost the belt to 'young' upstart Diesel, already 35 at the time! He looked well younger in 1994 and still looks relatively great and distinguished today.

I wonder if they gave Backlund the title, since George Foreman beat Michael Moorer (from my hometown) for the heavyweight boxing title at 45. One of the few times Vince may have really played off of actual current events.

This may be an odd one, but I was shocked to learn that Gran Naniwa was only 33 when he died in 2010... that meant he was only 16 when he started in 1993.

I think that was part of it, along with Backlund's heel act being good and Vince wanting to put the title on Diesel with less chance of him getting Luger'd by Bret fans. Not that it worked entirely, and the company was already in a freefall, anyway, but I imagine they wanted a transitional champion and Backlund fit the bill.

Interesting that Shawn Michaels and Hogan won their first tile when they were both 31 years old Austin won his first title at 33 (years old).

When he was Lord Steven Regal in WCW in around 94, I thought he was late thirties. Couldn’t believe it when I found out he was only about 25 then.

Ric Flair in 1992 was 43, when I assumed he was much much older. Years later I see him in WCW and i'm thinking has this man aged? Why is he still doing the same thing in the ring? How old is he? Am I watching a 70 year old wrestle??
Ric Flair my wrestling engima who I never understood.

This thread has got me thinking, how frequently have wrestlers fudged their ages to prolong their career, or to be taken more seriously by promoters or fans by seeming younger or older than they actually were? I know Ahmed Johnson and the Boogeyman both shaved a few years off their real ages, and I believe Batista did too. It's rife in the entertainment industry, what's to say it isn't going on in wrestling?

I always found it interesting that he looked the same from like the early 90s to 2003ish, then suddenly aged like 15 years. I guess years and years of partying hard caught up with ol naitch

All I know is that now that I'm 32 I'm older than a significant number of the talent.
It is really weird to see them and think of them as either my junior or my peers. Like, those are supposed to be the grownups on TV!

Macho made a comment about how great it was seeing a guy at Backlund’s age in the ring. The two of them were basically two years apart in age & we know now that Savage was against being relegated to commentary.

Tommy Dreamer was only 22 when he debuted in ECW in 93 22 stone. Because he's fat. 🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨

As a kid in the late 1990s, it shocked me that Sable was only in her late 20s, early 30s during her big WWF run. I always thought she was in her 40s. Obviously Sunny has many more deep rooted issues but I think a bit of the issues stem from being cast off for Sable in 1996. Sable made Sunny look like a high school student and I'm sure Sunny resented this older looking women becoming the next big thing while Sunny's career basically died off in WWF by time she was 24. It was a lot like Superstar Billy Graham's 1987-88 run. WWF gave Sunny as much as they could like commentator, backstage promos and finally returning as manager before there just wasn't anything left they could do with her. Again, as a kid watching this all go down, I definitely feel bad for Sunny given what I thought of Sable at the time.

As a kid watching WCW I assumed Regal had to be in his 40s.
Likewise Hogan has always looked significantly older than he was because of the beard and the balding.
