An extension of the Nickelodeon vs. Cartoon Network thread. Where did you go for most of your entertainment growing up?
I grew up in the '80s, so I started with the local independent stations and whatever they showed on weekdays. Around the time was when first-run syndication was starting, so aside from Popeye, Looney Tunes, and other classic shorts, we were getting things like Inspector Gadget, He-Man, Transformers, et al in there too.
Also, the networks' SatAM schedules of course, and PBS.
When we got cable, I gravitated towards Nickelodeon and USA (Cartoon Express!).
EDIT: Thanks for reminding me of The Disney Channel! HBO mornings too.

In the mid/late 80's I had access to The Disney Channel (back when it was a Premium channel), Nickelodeon, and PBS. I loved all of it.

PBS, Nickelodeon, and the local ABC affiliate's SatAM and afterschool schedules. SatAM always had the good stuff back then, and there was an ever-changing array of cartoons in the latter schedule. Had stuff like Mummies Alive!, Biker Mice From Mars, and Ronin Warriors, the latter of which I managed to purchase the full boxed set of quite a few years later.
I remember when Cartoon Network first launched. Their first tagline was "Every time you turn around, another toon!", and there was plenty of classic cartoons to be had.

Local stations were my source of cartoons. That gave me He-Man, Transformers, GI Joe, TMNT. Normal stuff for people growing up in mid to late 80s.

Did anyone in the 90s get those weird SunAm cartoons?
King Arthur and knights of justice! Fantastic Max
I think they called the block Amazing adventures!
It blew my mind seeing Sunday cartoons. It was a nice incentive to get up early on a Sunday and have something to look forward to before church
They also played Ultramam and Teknoman
I also remember USA network cartoon express.

I was a Saturday morning, Disney Channel and weekday afternoon syndication cartoon k-- wait, this sounds familiar. Yeah, those places were my home for the vast majority of cartoons until I graduated high school. I largely ignored Nick over the years, and CN wasn't around until later. I miss the days when syndication really had a great presence on local TV, which you might not think was a thing before UPN, The WB and The CW..... but it totally was.

This is the only reason to have HBO if you're a kid in the 80's.

Growing up in the late 70s,in my rural area, all you had was Tom and Jerry reruns at 3pm Mon thru Fri. Then cartoons on the three networks plus the UHF channel on Saturday from 5am till 1pm.
By the time I hit 5th grade there was cartoons on the channel that became FOX a few years later from 2pm until 5pm. It was a mixture of old stuff and newer syndicated stuff.
I can still remember the UHF channel's line up for Mon thru Friday.
2pm Rocky and Bullwinkle-Rarely got to see this since school let out at 2pm and it was a 30 minute bus ride home. 2:30pm-Jetsons-Started off as just reruns of the original series and later on added the made for syndication episodes. 3pm-Looney Tunes-Not sure what package this was. But I know I saw at least 2 or 3 of the cartoons that they dont air anymore. Pretty sure I saw some of the WWII era ones. 3:30pm-Superfriends-It was great got Superfriends reruns Mon thru Fri.Then on Saturdays got the new episodes on ABC saturday morning. 4pm-Scooby Doo-Was a mixture of Scooby Doo where are you,the New Scooby Doo movies and that first season/show to have Scrappy. 4:30pm-Tom&Jerry-THese were fully uncut. I had no idea these classic shorts were ever cut until I got online in 97 and was reading about what was cut/changed.
Cartoons ended at 5pm. But here is what they aired for the next hour.
5pm-Three Stooges-You got the classic theatrical shorts. 5:30pm-Lil Rascals-I wish some channel would air these again. Most of them I haven't seen since the mid 80s.

Nickelodeon, Nick Jr. and PBS for networks. Disney Afternon, KidsWB, Fox Kids, and other morning/afternoon cartoon blocks for programming. I don't think we got Cartoon Network until I was a preteen.

Definitely PBS. My mom made more bad decisions than good in my childhood, but one good choice she made was emphasizing PBS. Plus I was old enough to enjoy the tail end of good PBS kids shows, before shit like Barney.

This is the only reason to have HBO if you're a kid in the 80's. Well yes. But you also had its short lived counterpart, The Ghost of Faffner Hall, and repeats of holiday specials like Emmet Otter and The Frog Prince. Besides that, we also had: Babar Encyclopedia Braingames The anime versions of Tom Sawyer and Little Women The Berenstain Bears' specials Lyle, Lyle Crocodile The Worst Witch The Peanut Butter Solution Even got into the Afterschool Special-type movies they ran for teens and YAs. Like, "So What If I'm Gay?" with Scott Baio.

Keep thinking that one day a big boxed set of everything will be released.

Most of them I haven't seen since the mid 80s. Sounds like how I rolled back in the day. Most of the cartoons/children's shows, barring Romper Room, were either on Channels 5 (WNEW/WNYW) or 11 (WPIX). Seems that we are of the same age range, as the time I became a conscious TV watcher was when the local stations had introduced Superfriends and Scooby reruns. Both were on PIX, I seem to remember the SF package only having Wendy and Marvin (split into two-parters), the Challenge of the Superfriends, and the core team episodes that aired in SatAM with Challenge (the Wonder Twins were part of this lineup). I want to say the All-New SF Hour and World's Greatest SF were still being seen on ABC. Maybe the early '80s shorts packages? The Scoobys I remembered seeing on PIX would include Where Are You?, The New Scooby Movies (again, divided into half hours), and the 1978 series. So who had what otherwise? 5 = Popeye, Looney Tunes, Woody Woodpecker/Universal....they'd also acquire He-Man and Inspector Gadget. 11 = Tom and Jerry, Josie and the Pussycats, Pink Panther/United Artists, the TV Mr. Magoo shorts. Also known for Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse (which were apparently used as filler for Yankees' rain delays) and...The Magic Garden. Around the cartoon schedules, there were sitcoms of course, but of note would be 5 carrying the 1966 Batman late afternoons. 11 would likewise get the series at the time(s) of the Burton movies. Little Rascals was somewhere within 5's afternoon schedule from time to time. They also had a series of PSAs with animated versions of the characters (these were done by TMS -- yes, That TMS -- who also produced a Christmas special with the Rascals in the late '70s). The third indy station, (W)WOR-9, was slow to the kids' show game. As I said, they only had Romper Room for the beginning of the '80s. Only when MCA bought them out in '87 did they get their own cartoon lineup. Programs included Zoobilee Zoo, Dinosaucers, Beverly Hills Teens. Later on they'd get to air Popeye and the WB cartoons, and think they got the syndie package of Real Ghostbusters at one point too (it alternated between them and WNYW)
