Was discussing this elsewhere...in context of what was called the NWA and what causal fans saw the NWA as. I thought the Apter mags may have aggravated the myth, but no, during this time, they called JCP the "World Championship" region while having a separate NWA ranking with that top ten filled with wrestlers from the other member companies. Think this changed by 1988 or so, though, and they switched to treating JCP (soon to be WCW) as synonymous with the NWA too? Perhaps it was around the time after the first Survivor Series and Starrcade '87, as I remember the Apter rankings section getting major overhauls then...UWF disbanded of course, and them finally recognizing the CWA name the Memphis territory went under (that territory just unified all their singles championships).
Besides never calling the "Mid Southern" region the CWA, there were other quirks...see also: how they called WCW the NWA right up to mid-1991. And keeping the same hometown and weight for wrestlers who changed their gimmicks. And not giving into all of the WWF's name changes...."Mr. Perfect" remained named and ranked as "Curt Hennig" all along, for instance. And did it take the Powers of Pain forming to stop him from calling him "Konga the Barbarian"?

I remember some of the hometowns they used being different from the official ones. Didn't they bill the Ultimate Warrior from Queens, NY?

I recall them always listing "Eddy Guerrero" in the WWF rankings and finding that strange when I was younger.
He was always "Eddie" in WWF/E and that was his real name too. Did WCW/ECW/Mexico ever spell it Eddy?

The worst part was when they kept calling 123 Kid "The Kid" for pretty much his entire 1993-96 run.

It was through Apter magazines where I first learned Vince McMahon was the owner of WWF back in 1994, three years before they started acknowledging it on live television.
I wasn’t aware of exactly how the backstage was ran until 1997 or so when I first got online and was content to just go along with the show, but I thought “well yeah, he seems like he’s got pull.”

Which reminds me... Harry Simon's reign of terror in said letter section. Where he'd send mail praising Adam Bomb, and one infamous letter where he called Typhoon the best wrestler in the world.

The nerve!! How dare they disrespect the young Shane McMahon in that manner!

Did WCW/ECW/Mexico ever spell it Eddy? WWE was the only place that spelled his name "Eddie." That was all Vince McMahon. The correct spelling was Eddy.

Lot of "regulars" in the letter columns, besides Simon there were also John Pluto, Phil Bruno, and Rita M Buda.

It was never clear to me exactly how the rankings were decided. Can someone enlighten me?

The infamous "Cheat 2 Win" shirt that Chavo wore in WCW (not the one Eddie wore in WWE) read "Eddie Guerrero is my Favorite Wrestler" on the front. WCW changed it from "Eddy" to "Eddie" during his time there.
