The other day was waiting on a friend to finish up their shopping. Was in Family Dollar and just looking around...and found this rip off of Clue made by Parker Brothers.

Hasbro does NOT own Clue. A UK company called Waddingtons owns the original Cluedo and its American spin-off Clue, and license them out to Hasbro/Parker Bros.

Oh, that's right! Okay, I sit corrected. Maybe they didn't want to license the Clue concept from the company that owns it for this cheaper version, so they made the knockoff version to save money?

Mystery Game is priced at $5 but the copy I found was marked down to 3 bucks. ALso thanks for the info Madison. I thought Clue was originally a UK game.

I've noticed for a while now that Hasbro seems to be using the Parker Brothers brand on dollar store versions of its popular games.

Wait... are Chutes & Ladders and Mensch ärgere Dich nicht even copyrighted? 'Cuz I'm pretty sure they're not, or if they were, the copyright has expired by now. If I'm reading correctly, the overall game is ancient and long-public domain, but the specific name (it's traditionally "snakes and ladders") and its depiction of the game as a playground with children are original Milton Bradley concepts that they have under trademark. I think. But yeah, it's looking like these are just "budget" versions of bigger games to get into the dollar store market without diluting the original IPs' value.

Hasbro seems to have been selling their board games under the "Hasbro Games" brand for years now. So they may have broke out the "Parker Brothers" name just to use with these budget versions and renamed them as to not devalue the normal versions of the games.

No Apologies? Is that the "edgy" version of Sorry? Instead of Connect 4, do we have Quadruple Fusion? Instead of Jenga, is it called Plank Procurement?
