We all have seen wrestling bungle a bunch of shit, and most of us probably have some thoughts on how certain angles and shows could have been booked better. So, share them. What are some angles, matches, etc, that you could improve on within realistic parameters? (For example, if this is an ECW idea, money would be a problem awfully quick, so you need to account for that)
For me, you have the awful payoff to Michael Cole's heel run. You could make a great argument that it'd be better if you just never did it to begin with, since outside of the hilarious NXT season, most of it sucked and made the shows more obnoxious, but say I'm stuck with that. I can at least do better than Lawler failing to get retribution entirely, can't I?
Let's look at the pieces available. You have Jerry Lawler who, bane of many smarks he may be, he is wildly popular with a big subset of the audience. They adore the guy. Totally makes sense to have him be the man to shut Cole's trap. He also throws great punches. Very important detail for later.
Michael Cole, obnoxious twerp of a heel. Obviously, he won't fight his own battles if at all possible to avoid it. Calls his fans Cole Miners. We'll come back to that.
Now, you have the champion of the loudmouth heel, the one who does the fighting for him. It's a time honored tradition to have a muscle to back up the mouth, and Jack Swagger fit just fine for that. Doesn't need to talk much, his finisher can safely be done on King, and he's a big brute of a guy. The pieces all work together, but the payoff blew.
Sooo, here's what you do. Swagger beats up Lawler for a show or two, letting Cole escape and putting heat on Swagger. Lawler demands a match with Cole, who obviously refuses. Lawler says, okay, so how about I have to face Swagger first, and if I beat him, then we fight? Cole is more amenable to this idea, but still refuses, citing that Swagger has beat up Lawler before and/or that Cole "beat" Lawler prior, and has nothing to prove. So, Lawler suggests a more brutal match than an exhibition, that Cole would love to see Lawler brutalized, would he not? How about a Coal Miner's Glove Match, wouldn't the "Cole Miners" like to see that? Leather glove, metal bits for protection, quite the handy piece of hardware. Cole's ego and thirst for Lawler to be shut up once and for all are baited, and Swagger's all too eager to wreck Lawler.
Match comes around, and Lawler of course is beat down early, but, through a combination of Swagger's hubris and Lawler's grit and veteran's tricks, he gets the glove, and is gives Swagger a clobbering, culminating in a fist drop with the coal miner's glove off the topes, and Lawler wins.
Cole tries to turn tail and run, and several wrestlers, equally sick of his loud mouth, block the entry way, with one or two grabbing Cole by the collar and throwing him into the ring. Cole tries to plead on his hands and knees, but Jerry steps on his fingers. Cole jumps up, and Lawler raises a fist, with or without the glove on, ready to sock him. Cole ducks in fear, and Jerry grabs him, having baited him into ducking. He lifts him up, pretty safe piledriver, crowd loses their shit likely, both for Cole being shut up, and because Jerry so rarely hits piledrivers on TV.
Michael Cole takes a month or whatever off, selling his beating, and comes back humbled and back to normal, as irritating as his normal is, anyway. Still, the loudmouth is shut up.
Did I improve the story over the payoff we got? Would you like to fix this storyline or another? I'd love to see your ideas.
