As someone that started watching a little before that time.It never came out that way.Ever. And The Summer of Punk skyrocketed Merch Sales and audience reactions, more than either nexus or Lesnar/Triple H.And if I'm not mistakne it had a big spike and buzz before WWE ruined it. I was gonna post the same about summer of Punk. The buzz for that was massive, it just got killed damn quickly when Hunter and Nash got involved. It's not an exaggeration when people say that storyline COULD have been something major and special.

It might not have turned him into a star overnight but he came up with two of the biggest catch phrases of all time off the top of his head (Austin 3:16 and cos stone cold said so) so it was still a huge moment historically. Had Bret not come back in 1996 or had their has been no chemistry between them I don't think it would have mattered. Vince was all about that Warrior push in June of 1996. Maybe but considering the Bret feud DID work then it makes the KOTR speech important. The money they've probably made off the 3:16 slogan alone must be astronomical.

Yeah, otherwise, Austin 3:16 could have been looked back on as something like the Summer of Punk. "Wow, that was amazing moment, imagine if they hadn't dropped the ball and really got behind that Austin guy"

This is a wrestling hill I will die on. The speech by itself was not a big deal and everyone who says it was is using hindsight and what came afterwards to justify it. Had the program flopped the line would have been forgotten. I'm sure there have been 1000s of things said in promos that could have been just as big a deal. You can't have the former mean anythig without the latter.

The Hurricane beat The Rock clean - He actually won with a fluke roll-up due to a Steve Austin distraction. Another thing I’ve seen repeated a lot over the years is “The Rock put Hurricane over clean then Triple H squashed him the next week.” The following week Rock was the one who absolutely destroyed Hurricane. Triple H and Hurricane did have a match before Wrestlemania but it wasn’t a squash and Hurricane actually looked more competitive in that match than he did the Rock one. There was also a similar Hurricane/Chris Jericho match too. “But Hunter, we’re girls.” - This didn’t kill Beth’s tough girl reputation. She wasn’t scared. It was pretty obviously an act. She was just being a bitch in the hope that it would get the babyface out of power. I quoted these 2 because they drive me batshit insane. 1) THANK YOU!! The way people tell it, the Hurricane won a hard fought 25 min match with the chokeslam. In reality, the Rock beat the snot out of him for most of the match and was prepared to easily dispose of him when Austin's music hit. 2) Yeah, I really don't understand how people missed this one, other than just being so fixated on bitching about HHH that the narrative of her being legit worried just fit

The initial promo, though, resulted in little-to-no spike for the MITB buyrate, and that was before Nash and HHH were involved.

Hulk Hogan vs Ric Flair was going to headline WrestleMania VIII. In reality the Hogan vs Flair WWF house show matches did not draw all that well, Vince signed Flair mostly to mess with Turner when Sid was his real objective & he was never going to let Flair work a non-Hogan style main event match anyway.
