I was randomly going through History Of WWE the other day, and looking at the WWE results from 2006, one thing that got my attention was the sudden returns of a lot of guys from the mid-90s or earlier. Not meaning the ECW guys because that's a whole different thing, but guys like Tatanka and Road Warrior Animal, along with, of course, Finlay. The dark matches get even weirder, though, because there's some one-offs or two-offs that you'd never see coming. Stuff like Regal defeating David Flair, Sean O'Haire losing a couple matches (who I know wasn't mid-90's or anything but still random), and even Henry O. Godwinn, including a match against Bull Buchanan.
Was there actually interest in bringing some of the dark match guys back or did WWE just do it for some pre-show nostalgia?

I went to a SmackDown in 2006 where of all dark matches possible, it was Matt Hardy vs Flash Funk.
I also seem to remember Rated RKO murdering Jim Duggan at one point.

Alot of those were just favors at the time Godwinn had a real rough patch in life and HHH wanted to help him out. There was brief talk of making a new godwinns team but Henry wasn’t very good so they pulled the pull quickly.Animal was he had a name and his brother was head of talent relations.Tatanka was baffling at the time but they were on a big kick on having a variety of stars of all nationalities.I’d guess the rest where either favors or seeing it any if those people had anything to offer.

They also had a ton of young inexperienced talent on roster and having vets with a name can be very beneficial in teaching those young talents.

Some people were just one-offs, like Buchanan, Flair and O'Haire. But in addition to the ECW Originals, they also brought back Flash Funk, Jazz, Rodney Mack, Marty Jannetty, Gangrel and Brad Armstrong for house shows. Tatanka and Animal actually got weird heel pushes right before being released. Finlay and Dave Taylor both teamed with Regal at points and Taylor was teamed with Drew McIntyre for his original debut in 2007. Henry Godwinn worked in DSW with Ray Gordy as a precursor to Jesse and Festus. Duggan was actually a regular on Raw, teaming with Eugene and later Super Crazy. And if you go further on with Legends, Ron Simmons, Dusty Rhodes, Arn Anderson, Sgt. Slaughter, Roddy Piper and Money Inc. all helped Ric Flair in his feud with The Spirit Squad.

beginning in late 2005, TNA saw a massive influx of veteran wrestlers from WWE, WCW and ECW. in 2006, WWE saw a massive influx of veteran wrestlers from WWE, WCW and ECW coincidence? {Spoiler}...probably

Duggan was around a surprising amount in 2006. He had a proper full-time run, like. Mostly on Heat, but he was there like four years or something in that role in the mid-2000s.

You mean to tell me you weren’t a fan of Tatanka taking revenge against The White Man, Bobby Lashley?

You mean to tell me you weren’t a fan of Tatanka taking revenge against The White Man, Bobby Lashley? The only thing I remember about that was his face paint and his “thanks for nothing” promo which sounds dead inside

I was at the concession stand at a Raw in 2008 and D’Lo’s music hit for a dark match. I was marking out and quickly left to go check it out. “You’ve still got it!” *clap, clap, clap clap clap*

D'Lo made it back onto the main roster, Cole said "I spoke to him earlier and he said 'I'm ready to belong here'"
A week or so later, he was gone again

I remember they brought back Rodney Mack to work ECW, but he never made it to TV. Couldn’t remember the exact circumstances so I looked it up, and they actually signed Brad Armstrong and Marty Jannetty at the same time as Rodney to work in-ring. Totally forgot that Brad Armstrong almost made it to WWE TV as a wrestler in the mid-2000s.

I remember reading about the Nasty Boys getting a tryout vs. I think Dave Taylor and Drew McIntyre in either 06 or 07. Thankfully it didn't go anywhere past that.
