but NWA guys were already eyeing each other with suspicion probably, anyway, and someone was going to set that Mexican standoff off. Prior to Vince getting Hogan back and starting up the expansion proper, Ole had already tried taking Georgia national (and failed), World Class and Mid South were constantly having territory border issues, Southwestern had gone national with the USA timeslot and had struck away from the NWA. Memphis was constantly hedging their bets by aligning with the AWA or NWA, whichever furthered their own narrative, Stampede had also pulled out of the NWA, and Amarillo, New Mexico, Detroit, Gulas, San Francisco and LA had all already fallen in the year or two prior. Not to mention Crockett and Dusty bonding hard in '83, leading to Dusty torching the Florida territory. I still get a nice laugh whenever I see people try to paint Vince as the mean man who destroyed all the mom and pop wrestling shops. Yeah, Vince is, charitably, a ruthless business man, and less charitably, a total monster, but these are the same people who did what they did to Ann Gunkel, or Gulas for that matter (Even if he brought that on himself). How any of them can try to play noble, or anyone buys into it, is beyond me.

Vince McMahon Sr. is Vito Corleone, and Vince Jr. was Michael Corleone and right now we're living in The Godfather Part III

Vince McMahon Sr. is Vito Corleone, and Vince Jr. was Michael Corleone and right now we're living in The Godfather Part III A good analogy, Michael definitely was more ambitious and cutthroat than Vito and Vito has many parallels to Vince Sr. with the respect he commanded and his reserve. The big difference was Michael was pushed into his position and it brought out the worst in him. I also completely agree that we in Godfather Part III territory now.

Sr had DC, NY, Boston and Philly so it was de facto national already by being in such large markets And through Tunney, he had Toronto. SEE! I TOLD YOU HE WAS ON THE TAKE!

He knew, and warned everyone. This. He rather infamously tried to warn everybody and tried his hardest to sway his son away from the path he knew he wanted to go down. Nobody listened and his son's mind was made up. So it didn't work and here we are today. I can't imagine the feeling it must be to be in a position like Sr, where you can see the sunset horizon on everything you know and love looming ever closer and know full well that it's all because of your own flesh and blood and there's absolutely nothing you can do to stop it.

Wonder if he ever considered that, had he taken a more hands-on role in raising him, that Vince might have seen things from his point of view more. Or, had he not nixed Vince's desire to be a wrestler, if that, too, may have pretended the course things took.

And let's be clear - the only reason Sr might have been apprehensive is because he believed Vince would fail and take his life's work with him. He wasn't apprehensive about Vince doing it and succeeding.
