After a decade stuck in Chicago I've finally gotten through an interview and received a job offer back in Michigan closer to family. It'll be an hour and a half or so drive to my parents instead of 6. It is an interesting law job in government, so I can keep chipping away at my public service loan forgiveness. (If I can get my 260 f***ing thousand dollars of student loan debt wiped...oh man)
The only wrinkle - yesterday I just did a phone interview with a law firm that is even closer to my family (like 30 minutes away) with likely nearly double the salary. (74K vs probably 120k at least) Work life balance would probably be terrible though. They won't be making a decision on whether to invite me for an in person interview until next week.
Probably going to take the government job, I'll actually get to see my family and the subject matter will be more interesting. Hard to leave option B on the table though, even though I haven't been asked to interview yet. I never thought a large law firm would even give me the time of day with my mediocre academic record. (I lucked out into a prestigious clerkship with a federal appellate court through entirely serendipitous networking, which opened these doors)
Looks like I'll finally be going home.
