Bernard Tomic was fined $56100 by Wimbledon for his lack of effort in his first round loss to Wilfried Tsonga. link

OK but damn though, did the fine need to be THAT high? That much out of the paycheck for who is essentially a lower-midcarder? (I checked, Tomic's #96 in the world rankings currently.)

Tomic was once a top 20 player in the world. He's made decent money. The problem is that you HAVE to police this, because literally no one else can. This is a game that only has two people playing for its' entirety. If one of them is mailing it in, which is usually the case for someone to lose to JW Tsonga in less than an hour as opposed to Joker or Federer or some other overpowering shot-maker, then it's bad for the sport. Ticket prices are outrageous for Wimbledon and it is seen as the biggest of the majors. If you mail it in there, it's not giving people their money's worth and not giving the majors the respect they deserve. You can opt out of going to the tourney. You can have an injury or make up an injury and retire. But to stay out there and tank it, it deserves a fine. And the payout for a first round loss is the exact same as the fine. So go out there, try, and keep your money.

Of course it was Tomic. Dude has had a long-time reputation as a bit of a headcase.

Your pay has been cancelled due to lack of hustle.

I'd like to see this happen in the NBA when entire teams are lollygaggin' around in the 3rd quarter in a pre-Christmas game just bombing 3's with no defense

I don't get it. Simply don't invite him to participate next year if he mails it in. That alone should be punishment enough. As I understand it, not participating in a tournament you participated in the previous year actually hurts your ranking far more than going and shitting the bed.

As I understand it, not participating in a tournament you participated in the previous year actually hurts your ranking far more than going and shitting the bed. This is far from the first time Tomic has been accused of tanking it, and he's lost sponsors over it. He's been quoted as saying he doesn't care if he goes to the 4th round or loses in the opening match. A guy like that isn't gonna give a shit about his ranking. A normal player would care if he/she loses a match, how far he/she goes in majors. Tomic chose to show up, take that spot instead of letting another lower ranked but actually motivated player, and wants to take home 50+ grand for yet another piss-poor effort in the shortest match since the tournament where he set the modern record for shortest match. And that wasn't even the last time he pulled this shit. It's really hard to argue for leniency for someone who repeatedly displays poor effort and gets punished for it, and seems to be getting worse about it. At this point, another 18 months of this type of showing and all the majors will stop sending him invites.

Saw the ‘highlights’ of his performance on BBC Sport’s website and it was pretty hilarious to be honest.

Tomic and that other dickhead Kyrigos are both disgraces to the sport.
