Another show I've started on. A bit stunned they killed off Dale Gordon the first episode.
And I am still convinced Chris Jericho traveled to the past and sung the theme song.

Fun fact, Stan Lee wrote the theme song.

It is one of the few 80s cartoons that my sons and cousin's kids love. I have shown them all kids of stuff. But outside of Ducktales they hated most of the other 80s cartoons I loved.
But something about Defenders of the Earth they loved. Which is odd cause they had no clue who any of the King Feature Syndicate characters were. It was Defenders of the Earth that turned my oldest son into a fan of The Phantom. And after showing my cousin's two sons DotE I showed them the 80s Flash Gordon movie....THEY LOVED IT!!!!!!!
When Defenders was airing I never got to see anything besides the pilot mini series. It was odd. Channel 44 aired the pilot of the course of a week. But never aired the rest of the series. It wasn't until the BCI dvd releases that I got to finish the show.

I always felt this was one of the more underrated 80's cartoon and really deserving of a proper remake.

I used to love this cartoon on Saturday mornings. Wasn't a fan of Flash Gordon at all - I never did have much time for all-American, square-jawed hero types. But Phantom was cool, and I liked the 'next generation' kids.

I always felt this was one of the more underrated 80's cartoon and really deserving of a proper remake. I remember hearing ages ago Sacaha Baron Cohen was cast as Mandrake. Maybe it's a rights thing in terms of who owns what, but follow that with a Phantom reboot and a new Flash Gordon, THEN do a DoE movie? Take my money. I know Taika Waititi's doing an animated Flash Gordon, but in an age of comic movies, franchises and shared cinematic universes, Defenders of the Earth is the move, sureky>

They did publish a couple of crossover mini-series between the characters they called "Kings Watch". Personally instead of live-action movies, I'd prefer a new cartoon for the group. Honestly, these pulp style pseudo-superhero characters never do well at the box office. I think if any property though could pull off a serialized, swash-buckling action-adventure cartoon series it's this team.

Maybe it's a rights thing in terms of who owns what, It is. DotE came about during a rare time when Flash Gordon wasn't licensed out to someone else and the idea to put together a proto-cinematic universe came about. Since then, Flash and Phantom pretty much stay in perpetual separate rights deals. Well Dynamite Entertainment comics has (had?) the rights to the three characters as of a couple of years ago, although apparently not the rights to "Defenders of the Earth" itself. I think if any property though could pull off a serialized, swash-buckling action-adventure cartoon series it's this team. Dynamite had the comics rights to those characters, nothing else. They wouldn't have been able to do toons, movies or shows with them.

I remember there was a poster on the wall in the nurse's office at my elementary school with them on it. I had no idea who with the exception of Flash Gordon but back then I'd confuse him with Captain Marvel and The Flash.

My only contribution is that the thread title has increased my listening to Priest's Defenders of the Faith by 100%.

I've been reading a book about 80s cartoons, apparently our good friends from Q5 were responsible for Flash having a son, and Phantom having a daughter, originally it was going to be the other way around, but they thought that the more "masculine" Flash should have the son, and the more "feline" Phantom (?) should have the daughter. Well, at least they didnt make Lothar their driver.

It subverts the whole "passing the mantle down to your son" theme the character has and adds a new wrinkle to the mythology.
