I just watched the show and came to the board to make a thread just like this. Everything I was thinking has already been said but I just don’t get it.
These guys remind me of the Dungeon of Doom and it is worrisome that AEW thinks booking this shit is adding to the show.
Ive never seen one SSB match, but I its obvious they had a prior gimmick because the announcers won’t stop reminding us, yet they aren’t explaining why they are under a new gimmick. Its just confusing.

I think it's all the black scorpions following them. It looks like guys with a gimp mask fetish.

I've always enjoyed their work, so I'm not willing to write them off. I also don't think they've done anything bad so far in AEW. Great? No. But bad? No.
I expect better things from them in the future, especially Grayson. Dude can really kick it into a high gear.

How much of this is just leftover splashback from their confusing debut? The lights went out and everyone was expecting the debut of someone they knew, so these weirdos showing up was confusing and disappointing. But a lot of these complaints are just odd. Like, why do people need explanations about the Dark Order's gimmick, but not about why there's a wrestling dinosaur?

Because Luchasaurus is simple on the face of it - he's a big guy, he dresses like a dinosaur, he does cool flippy stuff. It's all very self-evident. The Dark Order is some kind of ambiguously magic, ambiguously cult S&M club that for some reason has a bunch of video game references in their moveset. None of it clicks in any sort of clear way.

Right. I want to like them, and I think the throne bit's fun, the minions, I think have potential for a lot of fun, but they need to boil down the gimmick to get to the core of it. Uno moreso than the other dude, but still, they need to get the gimmick and moveset on the same page and figure out what does that. Luchasaurus also has better gear, which doesn't hurt his case.

AEW is gonna have quite the balancing act to pull off or else and I have said this already gonna fall into the trap WWE has found themselves in with doing gimmicks that just clash with the rest of the show and creates nothing but a giant mess of ideas that do not work and go nowhere. In saying that though Luchasaurus is easy to explain...he is a guy that dress's like a dinosaur. As long as they do not try and go somewhere with it they should not , even though I am gonna miss him being the castleguard to an ancient aztec queen guarding her lair in her absence.

We're already kind of there aren't we? It's already been established by AEW that The Librarians are two indie wrestlers who've been given a shitty gimmick to try and get over. And The Dark Order are a previously successful tag team who've changed gimmicks because. With everything being so meta, how do you get people to take what's supposed to be a creepy cult seriously?

Being at the event live, the fat dude didn’t look impressive at all. The other dude was decent.

I know what you mean, but "a big guy dressed as a dinosaur who does flips is totally self-explanatory!" is not something that makes a whole lot of sense to me. In a world where it's totally normal to dress as a dinosaur (and maybe kind of BE a dinosaur?), much less a wildman from the jungle (legit not sure if it's stranger to BE a wild man from the jungle or to PRETEND TO BE a wild man from the jungle) it really doesn't strike me as totally wacky to have a devil sex cult. The devil sex cult is pretty familiar cultural trope.

There are some hot 'n' terrible takes out there, and the Dark Order/SSB being bad is one of them.

There's no reason why he's called "Evil Uno" in AEW. If we're supposed to take this seriously, why would he call himself "Evil"?
(And no, NJPW's EVIL doesn't count)
Just call him "Uno". And explain that he calls himself that because he's the leader, "Numero Uno".

The devil sex cult is pretty familiar cultural trope. I agree with you that saying the Dark Order is weird while Luchasaurus isn't is kinda "huh?" But Luchasaurus and Jungle Boy are silly on paper but they're so charismatic they make it work really well. And that's true of a lot of wrestling gimmicks outside of the most standard face and heel tropes. Like The Undertaker was a really dumb-sounding idea on paper but Mark Calloway made it into a legendary persona. That's the difference between them and the Dark Order: charisma. Dark Order isn't really pulling off the gimmick as well as Jungle Boy/Luchasaurus so any holes in their gimmick are going to be a lot more obvious.

This match is the only thing about them I've seen, but I was okay with it. Held their own fine, had a few flashes of excellence. I do agree that Uno needs better gear - way too '80s southern jobber - but if this is his normal entrance, with all the...uhm, disciples, then I say ramp it up a notch and play into the nature of it, without sexualizing it. Or go that way if that's the intention. But it feels like the prototype of a really cult classic gimmick and needs tweaking.
