Now, I am aware of it due to exposure to tons of US media, and my personal feeling son it is that it sure does exist! Your greatest mark-out moment as a soccer fan (if you are one)? I mean, I think it's a pretty obvious thing to ask of any French soccer fan old enough to have seen it: winning the 1998 World Cup. Even people who didn't care about football were ecstatic. What's the best French food in your opinion? Hm... very good question. As far as famous delicacies go, I have a soft spot for escargot. Never had frog legs so I wouldn't know. However, I think my favourite typical French dish that I actually eat relatively frequently would probably be bouchées à la reine. That is just delicious, especially if you can get some from a market or a butcher (although even supermarket versions are usually escellent). And with some nice pasta or rice... hm, hmmm! Also, it's not exactly something that one would associate with French cuisine as it has its root more in Germanic cultures, but it is local to my region and we ARE French, so I'll give a special shoutout to local dish Tarte Flambée a.k.a. Flammekueche, kind of our take on pizza but somehow even better (and more fattening). Thin bread dough usually made in a large rectangle, covered in crème fraiche with lardons and onion, and all that cooked in a traditional oven until the dough is slightly crispy. Ah, freaking amazing! It's usually enjoyed as a party dish and is still extremely popular to this day, even among young people, who still tend to celebrate anything from birthdays, to graduations, to holidays, to the fact that Tarte Flambée exists with several rounds of Tarte Flambée (and the beer that goes with it, naitch). Surprisingly, according to my parents, it had fallen out of fashion and had disappeared entirely for like 20 years until at some point in the late 70's, it suddenly made a comeback and has remained a staple of the local culture and party life ever since. For wine: Burgundy or Bordeaux? You may be disappointed to find out that I don't know much about wine. I do enjoy a glass from time to time, especially white wines (which luckily my region is a big producer of). I do often hear that Bordeaux is overrated, so I guess Burgundy (or Vin de Bourgogne as we say) by default. But like I said, I prefer white wines so f*** that, have some Riesling. BOOM! That's right! I just took your question and gave it an answer you didn't think of! I'm an ADULT! Is Quebec your long distance brother, distant cousin or that crazy uncle that you only hear rumors about and that last time you saw him was that family reunion 20 years ago Honestly that last one is surprisingly accurate as in spite of what many foreign nations tend to think, there isn't that much overlap between French and Québecois cultures (and Québecois people get really pissed if you confuse them with French people, so make sure to keep doing it), aside from Québecois singers being very popular in France (or at least they were back in the 90's, not sure if it's still as much of a thing). Even our variations of French are very different. To give you an idea, when I saw the film Bon Cop, Bad Cop years ago, I sometimes had an easier time understanding the English dialogue than the Québecois stuff. With that said, when the two cultures meet, as much as we like to give each-other shit, there's usually a kind of playful understanding between us. So I guess it's a bit of the crazy uncle AND the long distance brother. |

Why is your house music so much better and funkier than American house music? Because everything America does is a less funky verison of European things.  I've heard good things about French wine. Is this true? Probably. I mean, I like it but like I said, I haven't much experience with wines. And I assume there's a reason foreign nations keep importing it. |

French grammatical rules are always insanely complicated (that's why we have so many silent letters) and the spelling of numbers makes no f'ing sense whatsoever. This video sums it up perfectly (language warning): As for the second one, "Merde" is definitely a swear and is absolutely on the same level as "shit". The equivalent of "crap" would be "crotte" or something like that. Thing is, outside of a few exceptions, the French doesn't really have mild swearing. It's either strong of mild, so translating mild curses always leaves the translator in the awkward position of choosing between a tame curse, which may sound too childish, or a strong one, which may go too far compared to what was intended. Then again, we are far less easily offended by swearing than other countries, especially English-speaking ones, so it's not unusual to have outright cursing in stuff aimed at teens or even kids (reading local comics aimed at fairly young audiences really showcases that cultural difference, alongside the "female-presenting" nipples), which is why I'm always baffled whenever American people gasp and cry out when people use certain swears and slurs, let alone by the controversies it can create. And if you thought the British were casual with the C-word, you c***s have another thing coming if you come to France and hear some of the c***eries we say. Is it easy to get your hands on spinach quiche if you can't cook? Because in Virginia it's difficult. I don't think so but then again, I have no interest in spinach quiche. |
