"2,4,6, Greaaat"...gets a 9/10.

Pros:
-The highlight of this episode was of course the cheer squad. I can definitely see how Shimmy Shake and Light Hoof became so popular, they are so sweet and enthusiastic about dancing and didn't come across as haughty and superior as most cheerleaders in animated media came across. And, of course, for me, Ocellus stole the show with her cheering, giving me several bouts of diabeetus in this episode. Especially the cheer at the actual performance was wonderful and one of her most stand-out moments in the whole series. Kyaaaaah, I love my little bookbug. And they actually managed to give Snips a decent role for once. Sure, he was a little overbearing with the merchandise shilling but he was really bearable this episode and actually made had an awesome moment in calling out Dash on her BS. As did Smolder who, connected with that, made a really awesome speech as to why she joined the squad in the first place....Oh, and Yona was OK, too, I guess (seriously though, she was perhaps the most underutilized of the Cheer Squad).

-I had my fears regarding this episode and...it was actually fine. Sure, Dashie was douchey in this episode but to me it was on a more bearable level compared to past performances like "The Mysterious Mare-Do-Well" or "The Crystal Empire" or other of her more douchetastic episodes. The problem here lay more in that she was disinterested in the subject matter of the cheer squad and just could not get her enthusiasm up for it. By the short synopsis beforehand and the pics I saw, I thought the conflict was gonna be Dashie being jealous of Pinkie and Flutters and getting in their way to prove herself to be the better coach and that the cheerleaders were just a side part of the episode. So I certainly was surprised when I saw that that was the main problem: that Dash just did not understand why cheering is so important (though something that will come up in the Cons down there). And the solution to this conflict was pretty genuine I thought with Dashie becoming not a superfan of cheering but working with it from an angle that she really cared about and wanted to make awesome: the squad. And that's why I personally am OK with Dashie's portrayal in this episode.

-Interesting that buckball has become such a phenomenon that Celestia has an interest in it (and became quite the big fan). Also neat that the School Of Friendship's buckball team was not the main focus in this one and neat to see how ponies can work around being in a buckball team when they do not have members of all three races in it (though in case that there is an earth pony only school wanting to do buckball...how would the unicorn part work)? Also good that the episode actually went there and had them lose the game which I did not see coming. Certainly a nice come around.

-Other fine scenes with the Ponyville Team as well as a cameo by Zecora (though too bad it was only used for a joke). Also neat to see AJ, Pinkie and Rarity being so helpful in their short appearances.

Cons:
-It is weird that Twilight intended for this to be a lesson for Rainbow all along as if it was set-up by something we were supposed to know about? A call-back to "The End In Friend" perhaps (which is the only recent episode I could think of hinting at Dashie not liking to do things she is totally uninterested in)? If that is the case, it is certainly neat but it would have needed a short set-up to make the ending mean something. Otherwise, it seems like it came out of nowhere.

-So cheering is not important, Dashie?



I guess you wanted Flutters just to have a reason to accompany you I guess.


Anywho, a far better episode than I expected. A worthy 9/10.
