Been watching through some New Generation stuff and I freakin' love Double J. A gimmick that sounds iffy at best on paper--a country singer using wrestling to further his music career--that worked because of the performer being perfectly cast. I'd always remembered it as a jokey Wrestlecrap gimmick but he was legit and this was better than anything else Jarrett did in his career.
Whatcha got?

Honestly most of the New Generation era. Like yeah, there’s some terrible-ass gimmicks, but the wrestling was generally really good. Even the guys that get shit on like Diesel and Sid looked like badasses and put on some really entertaining matches.

While I always thought it was good it wasn't until the third time I saw it that I understood why Punk / Cena at Money in the Bank is as acclaimed as it is.

New Generation was a weird time because of the myriad of backstage politics and the gaping void of star power Hulk Hogan left in his wake to go to the WCW. But, goofy gimmicks aside, it was a pretty great time for more "workrate" wrestling especially with the likes of HBK and Bret Hart holding down the fort until Montreal and the next megastar in Stone Cold could ascend.

When I think about all of the faults of the current product one of the first things that comes to mind is how lifeless and grey it all feels. The New Generation at least had a vibrant, lively energy to it.

New Generation is my favourite era ever in WWE.
It was what I grew up watching.
Loved the stupid gimmicks aswell. It’s everything I love in wrestling.
Wrestling Binmen with catchphrases like “I’m gonna take out the trash!” and wacky promos and vignettes.
I just watched DDS’ debut and the whole dentist segments where he says “NEXT” and starts laughing win his yellow teeth was genius.
We don’t have stuff like that anymore. Bray Wyatt is trying to bring it back and that’s why he’s the best thing going right now.

If I’m repackaging him, I’d make him like one of the magicians in “Now You See Me” Not a Phantasio like magician. But an illusionist kinda thing. I think it would work and he would be perfect for it.

Young me was completely indifferent to The Rougeau Brothers. Older me rewatched all the Royal Rumbles and Summerslams and Survivor Series from my youth and realized The Rougeus had the best match on nearly every show for years.

Now that we know about CTE, a lot of original ECW matches and TLC matches in WWE are hard to watch. Absolute spectacles, but hard to watch.

Ken Shamrock in 1999 was way more awesome than I remembered and Val Venis in 1999 was way more shit than I remembered

In my mark days, I couldn't stand Fit Finlay.
Now I wonder if he's capable of having a bad match.

One guy whose stock absolutely plummeted with me when I watched '90s Yearbooks for another board project: Ultimo Dragon. Good athlete, good trainer...until 1996, had absolutely no clue how to actually put together a match or get across any sort of character besides "guy in dragon mask who does kicks." It was aggravating watching this guy stumble through generic-yet-overdone junior heavyweight bog-standard matches while the tubs of lard in WAR's heavyweight division were putting on amazing, heated brawls during the height of the WAR-New Japan feud.
On the positive side, big fat guys in general. I was a longtime member of the "guys over 350 pounds all suck except for Vader" brigade until I realized there was more than one way of working and that big guys serve a purpose, too, even if some are better than others. Specific guys whose stock has gone up the most are Earthquake, Yokozuna, and pre-WWF One Man Gang.

I've said it once and I'll say it again: Sid. When I was a kid, I was a bit of a typical smark. I hated Sid because he didn't seem to do any impressive moves like Shawn Michaels or Bret Hart. As an adult, I have learned to appreciate him for what he was. He was just a big bad ass powerhouse with his own unique brand of charisma.

Low Ki...
UNtil his current run in MLW I didn't like Low Ki. But after seeing him have some great matches in MLW I went back and rewatched lots of 2000s era Low Ki and now really enjoy his matches.

Bayley’s 2016-17 main roster work. In 2017 I thought she was being held back by booking and was going super until the Alexa feud, but rewatching highlighted that while that feud was booked like a burial, a lot of her work beforehand (with exceptions like her great Raw title match with Charlotte) was a letdown, including mediocre promos and some nervous in-ring performances.
