They're the artist, they get to decide what they play. I bought a ticket to see the band, not a ticket for a specific set list.
I might feel mildly disappointed if they don't play a certain song, but it's never ruined a gig for me.

Canadian storyteller Stuart McLean (RIP) once told a story about goling to a David Cassidy concert and hearing beforehand that Cassidy wouldn't be performing "I Think I Love You". People in the crowd were talking about before the concert started and someone didn't know the song... so someone started singing it to her. And someone else joined in. When the curtain opened, Cassidy walks out to the entire audience singing "I Think I Love You" in unison. So the band picked it up and he joined in.

Weird Al recently did a tour of nothing but deep cuts and b-sides. And it was incredible.

Heard that Dream Theater releases a playlist of what they will be performing at each concert... they'll do two or three shows in a town and put out a different list for each show, so fans can pick what show to see.

Unless a band/artist is touring with a Greatest Hits set, I want to hear stuff that hasn't been played to death.

I can see where it would be annoying, especially in cases like Faith No More where they had a catalog of music but would get people clamoring for Epic just because it was their "radio" song. Not saying they should necessarily outright refuse, but I'd imagine it would become very frustrating. Yeah, Radiohead never play Creep for that reason. Also, the rest of their discography is so vastly different from that song it would stick out badly in the setlist. Radiohead do play Creep every now and again. I saw them at Earls Court in about 2004 and they played it then. Their reaction to it always pissed me off. Yes, it defined them for a period and became almost bigger than the band (hence the song “My Iron Lung”). But the success of it let them basically have the clout to make music how they wanted to. Without Creep being such a commercial hit, they would never have been able to make the two albums that followed (The Bends and OK Computer) the way they wanted and the critical and commercial acclaim those albums brought wouldn’t have happened. I’m not saying they should love Creep and play it at every concert they do. But don’t be such a whiny bitch towards the song that built your career.

Generally, if an artist is touring around the time a new album of theirs is out, it's safe to assume they're touring to promote that album. And they're going to perform songs off it instead of making it a greatest hits session. Don't be that guy yelling "FREEBIRD!"

depends on their audience. If you have just a dedicated hardcore fanbase, I'd say play what you want. But if its just casual, I think you owe it to them to play your hits so they can sing along and have a good time. Get their money's worth.
BTW, bias schill, but Foo Fighters know how perfectly balance greatest hits with recent releases. Go see them!

I don’t think Eminem does any of his traditional first “poppy” singles in concert.
I saw Rod Stewart in concert and during If You Think I’m Sexy there was a message on the giant video screen behind him about how much he hates performing that song.

It kinda comes from knowing your audience and how it morphs over time. Tool can get away with not playing "Prison Sex" or "Sober" at every show since they've moved on so much from that style and their album tracks are just as celebrated as their singles. They still play those songs, just you're not guaranteed to hear them all the time. That's why I can get behind Radiohead refusing to play "Creep" as it was a typical angsty rock song when it was released and colored the band as something they weren't. I do feel like as time goes by, they should embrace what brought them to the dance and incorporate the song, or at least a version of the song into their sets. But I do feel like that would only come when self-awareness hits that you're living off your band's nostalgia, rather than still being looked at as an active, evolving group.

I saw Rik Emmett from the band Triumph in concert a while back, and he put it this way, "I know most of you want to hear all the old Triumph songs, and you'll get your fill, but you also gotta let us play some of the shit we like to play."

One of my favorites about this is Reel Big Fish playing "Sell Out". Now granted, they enjoy playing it but they always preface it by telling the crowd that "were going to play our big hit from the 90's". They would then go to a cover of a 90's song, mostly "The Impression That I Get" by the Mighty Mighty Bosstones (which, they still do a damn good version of it) or "Smells Like Teen Spirit". The latter, they stop and jokingly go "wait, that's not it...everybody knows that Pearl Jam does that song!" RBF is a blast live. Until you've seen them more than once and realize it's the exact same jokes every single night for the last 10 years.

There's a great David Bowie story about this topic. In the mid 90's, he went on tour with Nine Inch Nails and Reznor respected Bowie so much, he insisted Bowie headline. Now, this meant at least half the crowd left before Bowie even hit the stage, as NIN was vastly more popular at the time. Bowie would then start his set with about 30 minutes of his newer material, thinning out the crowd even more. He'd then look out into the tiny crowd that remained, say "Well, I guess you're the real fans then", launch into "Let's Dance" and the rest of the set would be this epic greatest-hits package played at full power. Bowie is awesome and I would’ve stayed until the end had I been there. I have to see if any footage of this exists on YouTube. This is a tremendous story.

If the fans know what they're getting, I have no issue with it, I mean, if you're going to see a gig around the time of a new album, you're going to get largely new material.

Depends on the band and how long they have to play, really. If it's a band whose still trying to make money off new music you damn well better expect them to mostly play from their last 2 or 3 albums. Especially if they only play for like an hour. If it's a band whose only strength anymore is coasting off nostalgia or it's a well established band playing a 2 hour set or something then yeah I'd probably expect more old stuff. But ultimately it's the bands decision.
