Okay, also, I'm not really one for star ratings anyway, but to me it feels like being willing to go above five stars renders the entire rating system completely worthless. This, negative stars, and .25 stars did it for me. Even just thinking 5 was the maximum amount of possible stars, between -5 and 5 stars you're grading on a 1-40 scale, which is just absurd. Going beyond that is arbitrary Pitchfork Media territory. This match was a 9.2. POINT TWO? WHAT WAS THE .2 FOR? I thought this ladder match was entertaining but all of the worst shit about ladder matches rolled into one. The immense number of tandem spots, that's WWE over-planned shit there.

Is it not a 5 star scale anymore after it got broken by that 7? Any time I see a list of ratings he seems to give something over 5 every couple of months. I legitimately think that it's just because Meltzer is enjoying wrestling as a whole more these days and that the original 6 star was the catalyst. Either way, it's one guy's opinion that he's free to express however he wishes. There's no need to project any rules on it or accept it as gospel. Its simply a framework to follow if youre looking to find a match that's of a particular quality level, of which you don't necessarily have to agree with.

Regarding the actual ladder match, it clicked on a better level for me when I rewatched it; given how often the two teams have faced each other, it really did feel more like a lot of the synchronized spots and whatnot were meant to get across "they know each other so well, and at this point they're obsessed with outdoing one another to prove who deserves the belts", that kind of thing. Plus, that synchronization and whatnot feeds into the lucha trappings of the match, so it still works for me. Not sure I'd have broken the ratings scale for it, but I don't blame anyone who had a complete blast with it.
And yeah, I do think people need to chill on Meltzer star ratings. Dude used to be stingy about five star matches, but he clearly feels this is an era that appeals to his tastes as a fan. Going back in time, it was clear that he was really into Kings Road style matches in classic AJPW, and there's a lot of influence from that era shining through nowadays, so the guy must be in his glory, and feels like he's seeing the next evolution in a style he really likes in real time. Why worry about it?
