Yeah you could really hear it on his podcast back when he talked about himself. It doesnt matter if it's "in character" or not because he's been doing this for years. It's classic Jericho. Man that Jericho return to WWE is gonna be wild lmao. I also dont get why anyone wants to do stuff like ths in character. Because it's entertaining? I get a kick out of Jericho being in-character like this. He's the ultimate showman, moreso than anyone else actively working today. Instead of people lamenting about Jericho saying this and that, they should really go along with the flow and realize it's all part of the act.

My big problem with that is that it's confusing for people who don't know which is which and when and blah blah blah. If it's framed to be out of character like an interview about the show, then it's reasonable to assume people casually coming upon it (the point of having stars give interviews is promotion after all), are going to often get the wrong impression. It seems counterproductive.

I think it is stupid to try and fool the internet to be mad at you IRL. Is it, though? I mean, first off, it's clearly working. Jericho can't cut a wet fart without people talking about it. That's buzz, that's promotion. And, as I said before, he's actually brought kayfabe into the modern era. He's working his gimmick at all times, and people have no idea how to react to it. It's god damn brilliant. In the pre-internet days, people didn't hate Ric Flair or Bobby Heenan or the Freebirds or any heel in kayfabe or in character because they had no idea that they were characters to begin with. As far as fans were concerned, these people WERE bad people. The hatred they felt for those wrestlers was very real. Jericho has managed to create a genuine animosity toward him among fans, and especially smarks like us. This is happening in a time where fans think they know everything, and Jericho has made people genuinely dislike him because he has convinced them that he IS this character. And what makes it great is the fact that he has found the perfect balance of real heat and drawing eyes without getting "go away" heat. People can say what they want, but they are turning out in droves to see him. They want him to get his commuppance. They genuinely dislike this guy, and it's awesome. Yeh and it is almost turned many people alway from Chris Jericho. Many people wanted nothing to do with him for a while, but he is so f***ing good it doesn't matter. Making people mad at you is not HEAT. It is not workign character 24/7 like MJF is , trying to blur the lines is silly and hurts you. For the record I like 24/7 on character. What I don't think is good is trying to WORK THE SMARKS.

It kinda feels like that at some point Jericho started to drink his own Kool-Aide. He has started developing that kind of arrogance and ego that he used to claim to despise in the older stars that held down talent like himself and spun fake stories to bolster their own cred. But does he, though? Like, Jericho was never this "aw shucks, guys, I'm just so glad to be here!" guy. He's always been a self-promoter, always pushing for how he's used. This is the guy who would contact dirt sheets to ask them if they'd heard of that Chris Jericho guy early in his career to try to get buzz, who would BS his way into bookings, like getting him and Storm onto Smoky Mountain by selling himself, or grin and bear BS promises to get booked in Mexico or Japan by shady promotions or with iffy gimmicks like Super Liger because he saw it as his ticket to bigger and better things. Jericho's always been his biggest believer, and it usually works out for him. Granted, it almost f***ed him over big in 1999 in WWF, but usually, it's meant he always has an advocate. Hrm. That's a good point really. Perhaps it's just far more appealing when that person is the guy on the lower rungs, forcing himself up instead of the guy who has been there for most of his career now.

I see it a lot like Corbin's act trolling smarks on social media. Only Jericho isn't as boring as watching paint dry.

That's fair, certainly. Easier to root for an underdog than someone trying to Bowie or Madonna and change up their image to try to keep current.

His shirt is the fastest selling in PWT history, seems to be working to me. That has nothign to do with trying to make people mad at you IRL but him being really good at promos and getting shit overthat is the part I don't think that works, not the playing character 24/7

He's not losing fans so fast that any of it matters. He's gaining them so fast through his shenanigans he's hitting a new peak. He knows what he's doing, and he's demonstrably succeeding with his characterwork right now.

Yes Jericho is hitting of the park for 90% of everything he does,he is THAT good that this won't affect him much. But it never really worked for anyone before and getting people mad at him has show to get people well uninterested in him in the past.It just never has show to be a positive. Like someone else said for Corbin's trolling. Or Matt Riddle being a dick. It doesn't cause people to be interested in their character.

He’s one of the best at finding a way to make this a work in 2019. He started this when he was working in New Japan and has masterfully continued it here. What’s particularly good is vets like him usual get face reactions no matter what and he’s riling up smart diehard fans to get heel heat.

Dude is just entertaining so while this will grind people nerves because you never know whether he is working or not, at this point it don't even matter because he turn anything into magic and run with it
