Obviously since IT part 2 is out there have been fresh comparisons between Tim Curry and Bill Skarsgard. And I maintain that Tim Curry was the only good thing about that 1990 miniseries, and it would seem there is no dismal film or show his boundless talent and charisma could not make better. But that got me wondering-has he ever had any bad roles? Any where you could tell that even he was just phoning it in for the sake of a paycheck? And as much as it pains me as a fan, I have to say...yes. The one that leaps to mind for me is The Pebble and the Penguin, a flick so lousy not even he could elevate it. And even his great musical ability could not make anything if some of the worst lyrics ever possibly put to page. But are there any others? Let’s hear what you all think.

He got replaced as Joker for Batman the Animated Series before it came out, with them bringing in Hamill. I think that was more them realizing it was a miscast, with how Joker probably would have just sounded too old.
I can't think of too many things he was in where he wasn't one of the better parts of it, though.

I can't say that his role in Command and Conquer was nuanced. On the other hand, SPACE!

Not his fault, but McHale's Navy sucked.

I really can't imagine Curry as Joker... even before the Animated Series I always imagined more manic and higher pitched than I think I ahve ever heard Tim Curry do.

I can't think of too many things he was in where he wasn't one of the better parts of it, though. Actually according to Timm and Dini, Hamill, and Curry himself the issue wasn't really that it was a miscast in the classical sense or that he sounded too old. By all accounts he brought a similar intensity and eerie feeling to the role as he did Pennywise (the closest comparison to another role he's done that Timm could make to his Joker). Problem is, early testing showed children were absolutely terrified of his Joker and so the executives yanked him and told Timm to find somebody else. Which led to the scramble that resulted in them picking someone who had only done minor character voices for them by that point (in reality, Heart of Ice was recorded before any of Hamill's lines as The Joker were) but they liked a lot, and Hamill got the call. Mark's mentioned it's partially why he was so nervous about the role initially. Not only was it The Joker, which meant a lot to a comic book fan like him to get to play, but it was so late into production that his prep time to figure out a voice and the character was practically zero. Allegedly the recordings of Curry's Joker still exist, buried deep within the vaults of Warner Bros. I've always been really curious if they'd ever surface and if we'd ever get to hear them, as a fan of Curry.

Tim Curry was in some terrible movies and tv, but he was always the best thing about them. Tim Curry never handed in a bad performance and he made every role he was in at least *good*.

I heard (and this means its probably not true in the slightest) but wasn't there something to do with the pirates of dark water as well? like schedule clashes.

I mean they already animated to it and Hamill had to act to the animation in the first recordings.

Should we consider Congo here? Although as cheesy as Curry is in it, he still rules. A tremendous bad movie.
Wasn't Curry also a choice for the live action Joker in the 1989 film?
As far as my favorite Curry role it's gotta be as Wadsworth in Clue. He just flat out carries that movie from beginning to end.

I've seen a few where even he couldn't save the movie like his role in that horror movie Ritual or when he was doing voice acting for Axel: The Biggest Little Hero

There are no bad Tim Curry roles. Just bad movies with great Tim Curry roles in them.
