Sorry we couldn’t get you a cup in San Jose, Joe. Sorry our ownership nerfed the future of the franchise when they spent a king’s ransom on a walking injury.
There was some speculation to Karlsson being an injury-risk going forward over the ankle surgery. But it's crazy to thik how wildly the pendulum has swung on that trade. At the time, people thought San Jose got one of the 3-5 best defensemen in the league for a bunch of spare parts. They got no top prosects and what was thought to be a late 1st in a year or 2. Tierney was supposed to be a ho-hum forward 3rd or 4th line NHL forward and Balcers a pretty decent middle 6-type upside prospect. But Tierney outperformed expectations and that late 1st in 2 years turned into Tim Stutzle. And for re-signing him, which is the real kick in the pants for SJ, they also give up a 2nd next year. They paid just a little bit more in order to sign what looks like it will be one of the worst deals for a long time.
The deal gets worse for them every year. His contract and his play looks worse and worse and the return keeps growing and evolving. It's really one of the crazier trades in recent sports history. Like the Herschel Walker deal in football. One team won the headlines for a season and the other team got a farm of players that looks like they'll only get better.
