Who in the hell came up with the bright idea of putting Mark Madden on commentary in 2000 era WCW?? Like, Tony Schiavone gets a lot of shit for his WCW calls, even though I personally don't think he's that bad on commentary, considering the fact he had to sit next to Mark Madden and Stevie Ray for 3 hours every week, I'd lose the will to live, too.
But, like, Mark Madden came off as a 4th rate Bobby Heenan mixed in with Jerry Lawler at his sleaziest and it's a horrible combination, like, even comparing him to a 4th rate Heenan feels like I'm giving Madden too much credit. Was Madden a friend of Bischoff's or something? Because I highly doubt he got the job at commentary because he was a good commentator?
Is there a commentator who's anywhere near as bad as Mark Madden was in 2000-era WCW?

Josh Matthews.
He went out to try and pick a fight with everyone who criticized his terrible commentary.

Only one name is down there at the bottom with Madden and that's... Larry Zbysko I mean not really but I just hate Larry for making EVERYTHING about him Everything to him was always a game of human chess. Except the New World ODOR! Remember when Larry really thought he sounded smart when critiquing the nWo at the start of a Nitro with "Now, I never put much stock into Darwin's theory of evolution..." Larry, for such a great voice and the second best rapping performance on "Wrestlerock Rumble," was a terrible commentator on every level. While, yes, Scott Hall got him over as a character during the nWo feud, his actual work in the booth was awful and got worse with the more screen time he got. Madden edges him out though.

Side note, I'm glad nobody's mentioned Mongo.
Steve McMichael had no background in play-by-play or color or wrestling or broadcasting and was thrust into a prominent spot to learn how live on the air on a massive cable network. Anyone else would have caved under the pressure, but Mongo stuck it out, improved as he went along, and had enough memorable calls to suggest he could have become really really good had he stuck with it.
There's a potential there that the Maddens of the world never showed.

Mark Madden may be the single worst announcer in sports history and I’ve seen some impressively bad announcers. My theory is that he got the job because he lied to Bischoff and said that he was related to John Madden.

Good in the ring? No, but he carried himself like he's been there all along.

My theory is that he got the job because he lied to Bischoff and said that he was related to John Madden. He got added to Nitro during the Kevin Sullivan era in 2000, so Bischoff was gone at the time. I'm not sure about how he got hired at WCW, but he wrote for the magazine and was a regular on the WCW Hotline for years before he started on Nitro.

He was a member of Kevin Sullivan’s nudist colony then. 🤦🏻♂️
