Downloaded this off the virtual console. Never actually played it as a child, so I thought I’d give it a chance.
Oh man, I vaguely remember seeing my friends play it as a child, so I wasn’t shocked too much by the different game play but man... why the graphics looks so much cheaper? Especially that overhead map when you’re walking around. Also, it’s a bitch fighting those bats and birds when you can’t thrust up.
Also, the lack of an instruction manual really hurting me as I’m not quite sure how to play or where I’m going

Your best bet in that game is to grind early for XP. You'll need it for Death Mountain, which is after the second dungeon.
Though the combat does get somewhat easier once you get the down-thrust and up-thrust. At least until The Great Palace.
Another tip: don't collect the Link 1-Up dolls until you're ready for that final level. While unlike the rest of the game you don't have to start at your starting location if you get a Game Over in the Great Palace, you DO have to start at the start of the Great Palace, so having those extra lives to hopefully prevent that is a boon.

I remember being so hyped when I got this for my birthday as a kid and then just being crushed by how much fun I wasn't having.

Honestly my favorite Zelda game. I know that's odd, but yeah.

Fun to watch, a chore to play IMO. Give me LTTPR all day, I could (and have) played it dozens of times and never grow tired.

I don't really think it's nearly as much of an oddball in the series as people say it is. In certain respects certainly but it feels like a fairly logical extension of certain aspects of Zelda 1 and it's very clear its combat influenced that of the 3D games.
That said I really can't claim to actually like it very much.

I actually like it a lot more than The Legend of Zelda. The overworld isn’t great, but I really like all the side scrolling.

I like how it tried to be an action RPG and the sidescrolling dungeons are fun. The jumping downward stab is also OP as f*** once you learn how to do it. I actually like it more than the original Legend of Zelda, though later games are a lot better.

I remember my brother renting it as a kid. My college roommate beat it over the course of a weekend but was like a zombie the whole time, lol, muttering to himself as he played.

Also the overworld not being as nice-looking as it was in the first game is technological limitations of the NES and its cartridges. The meat of the game was in the dungeons, towns, and the fields for random encounters, along with the bigger and more detailed sprites in those areas. Zelda 2's overworld functioned more like a typical RPG world map versus Zelda 1's where exploring the world to find the dungeons was as much a part of the game as the dungeons, which all had the same perspective. So it could get away with not being as detailed in order to save on space.

Great game that gets hate only because it's not Zelda 1 again. If it was it's own IP and not a Zelda game, it would be seen as one of the greatest games on the NES.

It was my favorite as a kid. My sister beat it and I'm pretty sure I beat it with her help for some levels. I didn't learn it wasn't well liked until later.

I loved Zelda 2 so much. The original is a classic, but so is this one.
Btw, for those that rag in the “I am Error” bit, in the game there is a purpose to it. You find out later in the game that you need to go back and talk to him again so he can tell you how to find the hidden castle on the island.

I never had it as a kid. But one Thanksgiving I got to play it for 5 days straight. Ended up beating it in those 5 days. It is a good game just that major difficulty spike early on makes the game a bit too hard to fast for most people.
But I would rather play Zelda II than either of the n64 Zeldas.

Yeah Death Mountain being level 2 was a fancy kick in the nuts.
The only good thing to come from it was the realization you’d need to grind some XP moving forward
