Who booked this crap? This completely disorganized messed. Was it politics that held him down? The big salary? The bookers? Vince?
He comes in and gets booed night one at Backlash against Rock. The wig with Goldust. The feud with Triple H that took FOREVER to get the title. Jericho feud didn't do much. And when he finally gets hot at Summerslam he loses.
There were better options out there such as feuding with Steiner, Kevin Nash, or even a longer feud with Christian who would make him look good in the ring. So many problems this first run had, the question is, who was at fault?
The company? The man? Vince?

It's funny how hard they like to dump on WCW, because WCW, for the most part, knew how to book him to his strengths, and that's why he was so over in the first place. WWE in 2003-2004 had no f***ing clue, and it showed.

I honestly enjoyed his run for the most part and don’t really subscribe to the view that he was weakly booked.
The guy beat the Rock, Jericho, Triple H (twice) and Brock Lesnar clean as a whistle on PPV. He also mowed through Randy Orton, Shawn Michaels and Jericho (again) in the Elimination Chamber. I believe he also beat Batista on Raw. And he was World Champion.
Don’t get me wrong, had they booked it better it could have been a much more prolonged and successful run - but that is not the resume of someone who was weakly booked. The main mistake they made was not having him win the Elimination Chamber as the crowd was hot for him that night and it was the right moment. Taking the belt off him so soon after he won it was the final nail in the coffin of that run.

The thing with Goldust and the wig has always been really overblown to me. Not capitalizing on his performance at SummerSlam '03 and putting the title on him that night did way more damage to his WWE run than some harmless backstage segment.

Bruce Prichard said on STW that Vince didn’t want to duplicate anything from Goldberg’s WCW run. They couldn’t have him on a big winning streak and beat everyone because he was only on a one year deal. Sorta makes sense but it’s also BS. He should have won the title at SummerSlam, as previously stated.

"It was good shit pal." Goldberg was a WCW guy, already had a bit of a chip on his shoulder and was entering enemy territory with a HHH that was in full ego mode while Vince is Vince. They weren't gonna work. Oil and water at that time.

Not as bad as people make it out to be
They absolutely missed the mark on giving him the title at the right time tho

Didn’t it come out that they kept the World Title on Hunter so long because they felt giving him a long reign would boost its prestige as a new championship? Not making excuses for him not dropping it at Summerslam. The crowd wanted Goldberg to win the title that night.

It reminds me of WWE bringing in The Big Show because they supposedly knew better than WCW how to book a giant, only to turn him a million times and have him parodying Hulk Hogan on pay-per-view after a year. At least it was the best long-term financial move.
