Even not counting the popularity aspect of it, I’d still say Bryan is the bigger and more accomplished star. Sure Roman has more mania main events than Bryan, but that honestly felt like the buffalo bills in the 90s going to 4 straight super bowls and losing

Bryan, if only on the basis of the Yes Movement’s crossover appeal beyond the squared circle.

There's really never been the slightest indication that Roman is a draw in any respect whatsoever. At least say what you will about Bryan, the Yes! chants went relatively mainstream which is pretty much more than can be said about Reigns.

Daniel Bryan is a star, as opposed to WWE telling us Roman is a star.

Bryan is a main eventer because he worked his backside off on the Indy and international scene to make it so the WWE had no choice but to give him a shot, once he got there, the audience liked and formed a connection with him. Roman on the other hand, was a main eventer because that the slot he was assigned on the card because of his look and his last name, no connection with the fanbase necessary, and he was actively rejected.

Daniel Bryan is a star, as opposed to WWE telling us Roman is a star. It’s kinda incredible how this time last year, Bryan was one of the most hated heels in WWE, and he’s slid back into being a popular face like the turn never happened.

Daniel Bryan had the wwe on his back from the higher ratings eras and was the guy cena passed the torch to.
Bryan passed the torch to Roman.
Roman is just re-establishing himself at the top of the card during a low period. I think when Roman goes after the belt again it will be more accepted based on who the opponent is. Hopefully not brock.
I also hope Roman does more movies because dude is cool.
It took cancer. But wwe is booking roman more as himself instead of as this idealized corporate version they want.

Bryan easily.
Roman post Shield has been bungled to the point that his chance of ever realizing the potential to be the face of the company is nearly gone.

I am not really sure on what metric to judge this. Daniel Bryan is one of my all time favourites and I of course much prefer him as a performer to Roman, but is he a bigger star?
Are we using the “mainstream” non wrestling audience as a means of measuring this or sticking to within the wrestling fandom? In the mainstream, I don’t think either are particularly well known. You could argue that Roman is a bigger star because he was in that Fast and Furious spin off movie - but I don’t think that fact was particularly widely promoted as a selling point beyond the WWE audience. You could also argue that Daniel Bryan achieved some mainstream exposure via the Yes chant catching on out with the WWE - yet I doubt too many of those doing it at other sports events were overly aware of him being its origin.
If then we are taking just the wrestling fans to judge it, then overall merch sales might be a good indicator? No idea who has the edge on that front as I know Reigns was top of the charts on that front for a long while, but also that Daniel Bryan shifted a lot of iconic Yes t shirts in his time.
If we are looking purely in terms of kayfabe - Daniel Bryan’s peek main event run was cut short by injury, whereas Reigns was the top guy for four or so years (and arguably still is). However clearly Reigns’ run at the top did not go as he (or more accurately WWE) hoped and he was widely rejected by live crowds. Whilst both guys have been around WWE has in general been trending downwards in terms of buy rates and viewership, but I don’t think the finger can be pointed at either for that (although Roman’s booking whilst at his most dominant certainly didn’t help).
This is too close to call if looking at it objectively and without any clear parameters on how to judge “stardom”. No question though, D-Bry wins it if you are asking who is the more talented wrestler and who was more successful at getting live crowds to love him.
