‘97 Shango would probably be an Undertaker feud before Kane shows up. (Also, did Shango ever feud with Taker in his original run?) They never feuded but fortunately they did face each other many times On the house shiw circuit. They also had two matches taped for home video release. I’m surprised they never had a proper feud, because Papa Shango seems like the perfect kind of gimmick to pit against Undertaker.

I would have teamed him with Taker.
The Curse 'n' Hearse Connection.

I would have teamed him with Taker. The Curse 'n' Hearse Connection. If they stuck around as a team into the 2000s they could’ve still used Rollin’ as their entrance music too - the Curse ‘n Hearse ‘n Durst Connection.

Have they ever shown pictures of his run on the house shows as Sir Charles?

I love the updated faceprint and costuming- basically an edgier version of the character. I would have loved to have seen what they did with the character in 1997. Voodoo Hoes. Funny you say this, in Fire Pro Wrestling I gave Wright the updated gimmick/name "Father Shango" and teamed him with an original CAW named the Voodoo Pimp. It would have been awesome if he came back as a hybrid of the two gimmicks

I would have teamed him with Taker. The Curse 'n' Hearse Connection. They actually worked as a tag team in Memphis in the late eighties (as Soultaker and Master of Pain)

Shango in 97 would have been cool but I think he would have been relegated to shotgun and superstars once Kane debuted and had been around a little while. ‘97 Shango would probably be an Undertaker feud before Kane shows up. (Also, did Shango ever feud with Taker in his original run?) I remember a match between them on Coliseum Home Video but never a feud

Wow never heard of this. Would’ve been interesting in 97 to see how they let this character play out.
I’m really surprised that WWE hasn’t put Wright in the Rumble as Papa Shango. I think the fans would pop seeing an old character return for the first time in what, 25 years?

Papa Shango/a voodoo character would be awesome if they didn’t make it so hokey and actually made the guy a threat. It’s a cool concept that was never really executed properly

Shango never really scared me as a kid, I was kind of into the character after reading the WWF magazine kayfabe story about him. lol. I guess I’ve always been a sucker for historical fiction type things. Undertaker and his bodybags on the other hand......

I remember these rumors then one week he shows up as a member of the New Nation with Vince calling him Kamabad Mustafa as he pins WWF Champion Taker. It seemed like he was in for a big push but nothing came of it.

It’s a cool concept that was never really executed properly Honestly I think the Shango gimmick just came in a the wrong time. A few years before and the character could have killed it in a more mature territory ala Kevin Sullivan as the Satanist in Florida. Arrive during the Attitude era and the darker aspects could have been explored like Taker in the ministry. As is, it was an usually dark gimmick in the otherwise wacky early 90s WWF.

Then again, early 90s WWF wasn’t exactly a lighthearted romp, since you had the Undertaker being prominent, an angle where Ric Flair implied Randy Savage was an adulterer, a storyline where a guy expresses his support for Saddam Hussein, a prisoner coming to get revenge on Big Boss Man for beating him in prison, and Jake the Snake doing his thing.

I wonder if they would have updated his finisher? A shoulder breaker wasn’t going to cut it, plus Rocky was using it in his matches.
On the shoulder breaker subject, as a kid, I thought it looked brutal, like he straight powebombed the guy onto his (Shango’s) knee. After I got older and rewatched sone of his matches, I saw that it really was not that and looked a lot tamer.

Whoa I’ve always wanted to see these, apparently he was supposed to come in, instead of Kane. I would assume around April 1997 as Paul Bearers new charge after Taker burned him, but they went down the Kane storyline route instead.
While the new face paint looks cool, it looks like he is wearing the same gear underneath. I can’t imagine Charles Wright getting a main event run against Undertaker. He may have been Takers scheduled opponent for KOTR and Canadian Stampede. Which went to Faarooq and Ahmed (later replaced by Vader)
I always felt Undertakers random feud with the NOD during this period seemed to be a random reshuffle

Mankind gets beaten first, then Shango, then we get the Kane teases over the summer as UT prepares to drop the belt to Bret Hart. And then Kane comes in during the fall.

I like how the tweet in the article describes it as a "darker and more realistic version of the character"
Because the fans aren't going to buy a voodoo witch doctor if it's not grounded in reality...
