Corbin on talks with Taker re: protecting your finisher

As much as we all slag on Corbin (though it’s no fault of his own, just how he’s booked), I do appreciate how much he gets it when it comes to wrestling stuff.

I get what he wants to do, but I think that drawing attention to it almost ensures that it won't get the desired effect. It's like how nobody kicked out of the F5 for like a year, because they wanted it to be a big deal when Reigns did it... And then he did, and it wasn't, because everyone knew it was happening.

Taker really likes Corbin and it's because Corbin REALLY wants to learn and develop himself. It's such a shame he's stuck with such ass booking and has been for a majority of his career.

Sure the idea is nice but Taker and The Tombstone both had this killer aura about then.

Baron Corbin doesnt,so while the finisher is protected people dont reallycare for it as a match ending destroyer finish.Nobody will be shocked because in the end it really isn't special.

You cant just know that something works,you gotta know why it works

Corbin has legitimately become one of my favorite guys. He just seems to “get it”.

I figured when Seth brought the Curb Stomp back that they were probably going to protect it, but the last few months he’s been spamming it so much in his matches it’s lost it’s impact a tad. I understand it takes more than one stomp to put Final Boss Brock down, and more than one stomp to put the Fiend down, but when he started hitting Bray with 7 stomps, I think that killed it as a finish for me.

100% agree with this. Baron Corbin might very well be a good dude that wants to get better and all of that, but at the end of the day he has a terrible look and has been booked 50/50 at best for his run. Taker was undefeated and unfazeable for a long time when he showed up and had an unreal aura about him. Corbin has none of that. That’s not even really a knock on Corbin, as not many have that type of aura, look, gimmick, etc. 

He can protect it for years, but no one is going to bat an eye when someone kicks out of it, because it’s Baron Corbin. Just who cares?

It also didn’t help he kicked out of it another 5 times...and still lost the match somehow. Pretty much making that whole year long build redundant.

This is an era where finishers don't matter. Every match will have finisher kickouts followed by the Macaulay Culkin Home Alone face (hands on face optional). Rinse and repeat. Corbin is trying to bring something back that will never return again. The days of Jake's DDT are long gone.

That’s great and all, but I don’t think it’s really going to be up to him in the end.

The current wrestling product is one where finishers get spammed and guys kick out of them way too frequently. And it’s not just at WrestleMania anymore.

I really don’t think anything is sacred anymore because booking for the long-term and keeping guys (and moves) protected just isn’t something that’s done for the most part anymore.

The whole mindset seems to be “Anybody/anything can be rehabbed,” so it’s okay that we have, say, Ricochet do three straight TV jobs because we can just get his heat back in a couple of months. I don’t think it’s a particularly great idea, but this is how the WWE operates for the most part in the present day.

It's like the Superkick - barely anyone used or kicked out of it when HBK was active. Since he's retired, everyone and his mother uses it - and not even as a finish.

Makes me wonder what Shawn thinks about that.

I mean, for a big chunk of his career it was a mid match move that he'd use but never get the pin with.

Honestly on that subject I would like companies to try and work matches that don't end in finishers often.

Have then and all,the ace move that could very likely signal the end, but if you do a great spot that looks killer,use it as the end of a match.

Like others have already said I respect the way Corbin thinks about THIS BUSINESS, but I would've never known that about End of Days unless somebody told me.

I do think Black Mass is one of the very few finishers in the company right now that truly feel like it's going to end every match and would shock people if somebody kicked out.
