I wouldn't mind it if it was more like a Jake Tunney style role where he not used weekly and all over the show but more when something really major needed to be announced. As long its more a middle man style and not the same old heelish authority figure and whatever that's been over done for years.

Knowing Cody and Co., I'm more inclined to believe the commissioner role would be more like Tunney, Regal, or Dillon where they are only really making matches and settling disputes as the on-screen 'authority' of making that call, not Stephanie/Hunter's "Authority" being a focal point of storylines and controversy.

I can see them just being used as someone to make matches and try and keep order, which makes sense given what's been going on
I don't think they need to be all over the show, or would be, but Tazz wouldn't be a bad choice I don't think. Let's see if it even happens.

Taz would be fine for this sort of role. I do think AEW needs some sort of authority figure just to give what's happening some basis of "Who is booking this?" Don't put the GM/Commish all over the show and it will be okay.

If it’s a Tunny, I’m fine with it. Then you don’t have to have them there making decisions and at least gives management a face that isn’t Khan.
Anything else? I’m good.
I’m honestly not that fussed if it doesn’t happen because I’m over the idea of a promotion “needing” to have one.

I am willing to give him a chance if they do it. I imagine some sort of commissioner makes sense given 4 of the top guys being EVPs. Even if they haven't done anything to suggest in kayfabe they've abused their positions, it's still probably prudent to have a buffer. Helps Taz can be stoic if he wants, but also is willing to not take himself too seriously.

Meltzer just straight-up denied this on Twitter, saying that AEW has no plans to add an authority figure.

If their idea of a commissioner is a Jack Tunney-type whose role is to add gravitas to the occasional announcement or contract signing, that would be absolutely ideal. It needs to be someone one can see as symbolic of wrestling's rules and conventions - someone who can be mentioned and, by mentioning them, gives weight to a commentary or promo.
I'm not sure Tazz is that guy, but there are some who can be. Bret Hart could be that guy simply because he is that link to wrestling's past and deeply understands what wrestling is about (and is seen as someone who understands.) Paul Ellering could be another: I'm not sure of his role with WWE currently, but he could be that anchor.

Really hope Meltzer is right and this report is BS. After twenty years of WWE running the trope into the ground, I appreciate that AEW doesn't have authority figures, and I'm also not much a fan of Tazz.

Commissioner Jim Ross could work, nominally face aligned, but by the book in a way that heels can exploit. Being in no shape to take bumps would spare us the cringe inducing heel or badass face commissioner nonsense we've gotten from the WWEnd we'd get from AEW if they went with DDP.
