I don't get it. At all. It's kind of a small horse, I mean what am I missing? Am I crazy?

We usually get a few threads a year on best finales, so I thought it'd be fun to do one on best pilot episodes.
I'll start off with one I feel is underrated: That 70's show.

I liked Scrubs' pilot a lot.

The pilot episode of 'The Critic' is super underrated. No exposition dumps, just instant understanding of who everyone is by the strength of the writing and voice acting.

Depending on how you want to view it, because it was the 2nd episode to air, but the first “regular” one. Bart the Genius saved the Simpsons. It was in the danger of being abandoned.
It’s not what the series would become but a solid episode.

The first 2 episodes of Lost count as their pilot and they are honestly brilliant. The opening 10 minutes with the aftermath of the plane crash is so intense. The introductions of the characters is really well done and the ending line is just a great tease for the mystery with Charlie just asking, "Guys, where are we?"

CSI: (original series). Introduces you to all of the main characters and their backgrounds. Sets the tone for what the series is going to be and gives a nice intro to forensic science for the layperson viewer. I know I’m in the minority but the entire first season is my favorite of the series.

The Shield is still probably my number 1, but The Mandalorian is up there now I remember watching the first episode of The Shield in awe. When the first commercial hit and I could relax I realized they had gone the entire first half hour with no commercial breaks.

since it hasn't been said yet, The Sopranos The Shield is still probably my number 1... there's one thing that hasn't aged well about The Shield's pilot (besides Michael Jace being a murderer). if you're trying to get someone over as a legit badass, don't play Kid Rock

Oz, especially for having the balls to set the entire episode around Dino Ortolani, giving off the vibe that he's gonna be a major player, then setting him on fire at the end.

Now, by "pilot" do you mean pilot to sell the show, or the first aired episode?
(Sometimes the two are synonymous of course)

"COPS"
I bought the pilot episode on DVD and the way it was shot/presented was way different and more subdued than later episodes.
It was a more quiet, cinematic looking show.

DS9's "Emissary"
Wasted no time at all in establishing that this was unlike any previous Trek. It set up the central issue of Bajor's reconstruction, established all the characters superbly, introduced Trek's greatest ever villain, and also laid the groundwork for the sublime Sisko/Prophets arc that would be ever present throughout the entire run of the show.

Sisko's arc in just this first episode is incredible. For anyone holding on to guilt, you know what it feels like to be drug back into a bad place in your life. When Sisko demands why the Prophets keep bringing him back to his wife's death, their response that HE keeps taking them back there, followed by Sisko's realization that he never left that point in time. And realizing this, he finally CAN move forward. I love TNG and TOS, but they never did that kind of emotional journey in one of their characters.
