Twenty years ago this week people were worried that planes would fall out of the sky and every computer would go insane and start WW III. Or something. Anyway it was a more innocent time. Happy Anniversary Y2K compliant gag. You may be gone but you've been missed. (OK not really)

I remember being so bummed out when 12 hit that night and all the power and everything still worked, even as a 13 year old I kinda wanted to see the anarchy.
I was a f***ed up kid

I remember being so bummed out when 12 hit that night and all the power and everything still worked, even as a 13 year old I kinda wanted to see the anarchy. I was a f***ed up kid I was 12 and kinda remembered (despite waning hysteria) there were a lot of news reports/voices in the media that were like “Chill. Nothing’s gonna happen”. So my chaotic little self was prepared for it to be business as usual.

It's a good thing that people worked so hard to stop it from having more disastrous effects than it did.

I remember seeing infomercials about all of the things that were going to go wrong. They were so helpful trying to sell people those Y2K survival kits.

It's a good thing that people worked so hard to stop it from having more disastrous effects than it did. I mean it became a joke but it absolutely was a possibility things would have screwed up massively. some Unix things are going to mess up in 2038 for related reasons... though most major systems of it have been fixed.

ugh my mother bought into it, she stockpiled water, canned foods and candles in the basement. My father was with her for awhile, but he eventually brushed it off, and then once it started rolling onto 2000 for other nations, he was like, "See, nothing happened! I knew it wouldn't!" lol. We had canned soups and candles and stuff in bins in the basement for a good year until Mom finally unpacked it all heh

Y2K proved that the bad things we're warned about can be stopped if they're taken seriously by people who know what they're doing. Shame humanity is not willing to do this with other problems and people use Y2K to dismiss warnings from experts as alarmist.

All the adult animated shows had an episode about Y2K. And of all the shows on Fox had episodes about the Super Bowl.
Interesting year 1999.

Yeah, Y2k and the 2038 problems were/are being treated seriously by people in the tech industry. Did it go a bit extreme from people who didn't fully grasp the problem or those that tried to profit off it, absolutely. To my knowledge no one that was actually working on it expected anything to happen to planes for instance. But it could have caused major problems if the programmers just flat out ignored it.
