Weekend Pass is fun. Is Van Nuys BLVD on there? If so give it a watch. It's the best comedy Crown ever did. It’s on there but I still need to get to it. Oddly enough Mill Creek did not put it with the other 1970s/80s comedies, but instead as the fourth feature after three crime movies (?). It’s not that odd as Mill Creek’s default on these sets seems to be take a bunch of movies and throw them anywhere. But this one actually seems to have some rhyme and reason to it. The first three discs are just that Gorehouse Greats set we talked about before. The next three are those comedies, then a few discs dedicated to 1960s/70s biker flicks. After that it seems to get more random, but as I go through it maybe I’ll find some reasoning to it. I know later on in the 50 disc set a bunch of martial arts movies are all grouped together so that’s like it’s own little section The Virgin of St. Francis High and Going Steady are also randomly placed. They could have taken those two and put it on the same disc as Van Nuys Blvd along with something vaguely related for another similar disc. But again it’s Mill Creek so not a lot of thought was put into it. Also, related to those comedies I capped off last night by watching Coach (1978). Such a messed up movie by today’s standards, but even back then I have to believe it raised some eyebrows. I have to spoil it to get into what was so messed up about it. {Spoiler}{Spoiler}A woman is accidentally hired to coach a high school men’s basketball team. When the principal finds out he acts like a child molester was hired. But this is the 1970s so having an anti-feminist boss isn’t weird at all. Then she starts having the star player over for dates at her beach house. I thought I must have mixed up something and she was actually dating a school board member she had flirted with. Nope. Then she starts sleeping with him in fairly graphic sex scenes. It is never expressly said that the student is 18 so maybe she was a child molester after all. Even if he is 18 it’s still messed up because the nature of the teacher/pupil nature of the relationship has been violated. In addition to that after the teacher preaching the whole movie that her team could beat anyone and they just have to focus on basketball, she then uses underhanded tactics to win the final game. You’d think some of this would get tied up in the end even if it is a cringeworthy “Love is love” or “You have to do what you have to do” speech, but instead the movie just ends. Years ago on the Exploited Cinema Podcast we covered two of Crown's films. Malibu Beach and Van Nuy BLVD. Beach is a fluffy comedy, that has a fairly creepy rape scene about halfway thru. They seem to do that with lots of their films. Either have a rape scene or a fairly graphic sex scene in the middle of what is a comedy. Just like the owner of Crown had a rule that in their comedies one of the leads must be named Bobby. I know I saw Coach before but it has been years. I will have to find my copy of Drive In Greats and check it out.

I mean it technically does, but that one, The Pom Pom Girls, The Beach Girls, and I’m guessing Malibu High can best be described as just a bunch of teens screwing around in Southern California. It’s like by 1983 Crown made the executive decision that everything had to have a little more of a plot even if it was still just basically teens/twenty somethings screwing around in So Cal. So that’s where things like My Tutor, Weekend Pass, My Chauffeur, etc. kick in. Although for the earlier Crown comedies Malibu Beach is a little better than some solely because it features Dugan, a bad guy from The Van. That one is essentially just like Malibu Beach, etc. except the main character has a pimped out van. I haven’t noticed any other reoccurring characters. Well unless all the Bobbys are supposed to be the same lol.

Love how in Malibu beach he is at the beach working out with his weight bench. Then later on they show he arrived on his motorcycle. HOW THE HELL did he get the weights and the bench to the beach on a MOTORCYCLE!

220. The Prince and the Pauper (1962) 221. Batman: Hush (2019) 222. The Addams Family (2019)So I signed up for Hulu to watch the new Animaniacs and found a couple other things I've been looking to watch for awhile on it, this included. I had heard that this wasn't that good, but I found it enjoyable. Probably not quite enough story for 82 minutes but I thought it was fun.

184. Overboard (2018) - Watched this on DVD. Had this from the library and I told myself that I would watch it, especially after watching the 1987 original. I will say that many things felt so familiar, especially with watching both versions back-to-back. There were a lot of plot elements that were reused, but I will give it some credit for some changes made. Eugenio Derbez and Anna Faris had good chemistry and they both played their roles well. Though I will say that the original version is the better film, I still had fun with this movie.

222. The Addams Family (2019) 223. Tiny Toon Adventures: How I Spent My Vacation (1992)Another movie I found on Hulu that I was interested in. I haven't seen this in at least twenty years. Weird thing is I remembered the Plucky/Hamton story, and the Fifi and Shirley stories, but I forgot all about the Buster and Babs story. Funny how memory works. Oh well, fun movie, glad I got to see it again.

I don't love the war drama genre outside of a few films. This was one of the better ones thanks to quality acting, some interesting characters, and really intense scenes. [****]

318. Demons 2: the Nightmare is Back *DVD* Sadly lacking the gore and heavy metal of the first one but I find it almost as good. I really liked how it tied into the first movie and the apartment building setting. Truth be told I really enjoyed the build towards the Demons arrival more than any part of the movie. I found all the different sub groups of characters really interesting. But the true highlight for me is Bobby Rhodes and his being cast as an entirely different character from the first movie. I really have to check more of his work out but I don’t know if I can accept him in anything other than a Lamberto Bava horror movie.

222. The Addams Family (2019) 223. Tiny Toon Adventures: How I Spent My Vacation (1992) 224. Wakko's Wish (1999)Another find on Hulu that I haven't watched in nearly twenty years. Again, another fun movie. Don't really know what else to say about it.

At first, I was thinking that this was kind of slow but it all came together incredibly well. The performances are top notch, the story converges very well, and there are some great arcs, characters, and moments. [****½]

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Digital Copy
Got this back in Feb,but had put off watching it till we could watch it together. Wow it is long. But pretty decent. Pretty much everyone in the film was great, besides Margot Robbie. Seen her in 3 movies now and yea she hasn't impressed me at all. Average at best acting skills.Anyways thankfully I hadn't had the ending spoiled for me. So I was nicely surprised.
Green Room
Digital Copy
I bought this the day it hit Blu Ray after hearing great reviews for it. Then it sat on my shelf unwatched for years. Wanted something new to watch and remembered I had a digital copy.
A punk band really needs some money. So agree to play a gig that they are suspect about. Ended up being at a white power skinhead club. THey open with a cover of the DK classic Nazi Punks f*** off. Finish their set and when they goto leave they discover that someone was stabbed to death in the Green Room. They are trapped at the club. And a evil as f*** Patrick Stewart shows up as the leader of the local white power skinhead chapter.
Really well done film. Worth tracking down if you like thrillers.

A decent stretch of this is kind of bland. However, Rebecca Hall is fantastic as the lead and the climax is pretty fantastic. [***]

319. Violent Shit *DVD* Holy mackerel. This was some good...shit. It had no real story. No lead protagonist. No one to root for. A character is introduced and Karl the Butcher butchers them in different gruesome fashion. It does go into Karl’s background enough to let you know what the f*** is going on. What it does have is blood. Lots of blood. Gore. Lots of gore. Terrible video. Incredible music. Cannibalism. Jesus on a cross getting disemboweled followed by Karl crawling into the empty cavity of his stomach. Genital mutilation. And gore. Gore. GORE! Be on the lookout for the scene where young Karl meets with Satan while locked in his mother’s basement. That is the stuff of legend. This is becoming my favourite series of horror movies. 22/10

185. City Slickers - Watched this on HBO on Demand (initially tried a DVD from the library, but I saw that there were scratches, which affected the play, so I went with a plan B). For some reason, I had reminded myself that I had never watched this movie before. I remember hearing of it and maybe seeing scenes of it in passing, as well as seeing a VHS on a shelf at a relative's house. I decided to finally change that. I have to say that after nearly three decades, this movie definitely holds up. It's still a funny film, especially in some awkward moments (though they were supposed to be). The leads had great chemistry with one another and also had good writing with some character development. It also had some fun adventure scenes. It definitely holds up to this day.
186. City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold - Watched this on DVD. I had heard that this movie wasn't that well-received. Some of it was because one character didn't return and had someone else in his place. Although the first film was the superior film, I really don't think this film was bad. Yes, there were some issues with the plot, as some of it being a rehash of the original, as well as Jack Palance returning but playing a different character (I know he was Curly's twin, but still). However, I still found the movie fun. Some of the humor worked and it still had some fun adventure scenes. So while I will agree it may be inferior to the original, I didn't think the movie was bad. It was still entertaining.

I picked out this movie because the cast has people I like. They mostly delivered, with Nicholas Braun and Zoey Deutch standing out. However, the plot is generic, it's not all that funny, and the love story is bland. [**½]

66. Over the Moon
A girl builds a rocket and flies to the moon to meet the moon goddess. And then....flying lions and multicolored cakes and biker chickens and giant flying frogs and zero G ping pong. I was confused and entertained at the same time.

320. Violent Shit II: Mother Hold my Hand *DVD* I went into this with much higher expectations than a sane person would but wow it exceeded them. It was definitely more violent and gorier than its predecessor, with Son of Karl being even more brutal than his deceased father (who I don’t even remember dying in the first one). It does more to explain what the hell was going on in the first movie in five minutes than that movie did in its entire run-time. And also adds humour (which can be lost in all the splatter) and some incest, because why not. If there’s any downside it’s that it eschews that arty edge the first movie had. That was sick shit that mesmerized you. This was sick shit that made your jaw drop. That and there was a scene at a construction site where there was a wood chipper or something and it didn’t get used. So it’s settled. f*** Freddy. f*** Leatherface. f*** Pinhead. And f*** even Jason. Karl the Butcher is the King and Violent Shit is the shit. 21/10

581. Uncle Frank (2020) – Though this took a bunch of twists and turns you expected, I still thought this was an effective drama with three great performances from the leads I would say Paul Bettany's best performance so far IMO,Peter Macissi impresses as his boyfriend and Sophia Lillis in a few short roles as felt like someone to watch out for, coupled with supporting cast of actors I really like (Judy Greer, Steve Zahn, Stephen Root), I had both happy and sad tears by the end. (****)
582. Lionheart (aka A.W.O.L.) (1990) – known to me as A.W.O.L growing up, this film co-written by Jean Claude Van Damme covers every fighting movie cliché in the book and speaking of cliches each and every character is one including a Scottish fighter in a kilt and JCVD's precarious niece (played by Ashley Johnson, who as worked constantly to this day) and those cliches are not a bad thing here, far from it, I really enjoyed this movie though I'd didn't really want to see JCVD's arse. Hell Hole aka Escape from Hell Hole A late 70s WIP movie. Standard fare for the genre. The version I watched was off a Video Asia "Grindhouse Horrors" set. Looks like they took an ancient ex-rental VHS,projected that on a wall.Filmed thi projection and transfered that to DVD. Girl from out in the countryside gets recruited by her "aunt". THinking she is gonna get a better life. Nope she is gonna be used as a group of mercenaries plaything. Full of exactly what you expect from a Women in Prison movie. Sadly this appears to be the only digital release of the film.

67. Jingle Jangle
A bright and colorful and musical movie about a toy maker who loses his magic and then finds it again with some help from his granddaughter. Some songs are fun, some are more “will this please end so we can get on with the story”. The story jumps all over the place. The subplot of mom (grandma?) telling the story to the kids was entirely unnecessary and should have been edited out. Keegan Michael Key played a delightfully dastardly villain.
