Is it just me or does the first 4 seasons of Family Matters feels like a totally different series compared to the rest of the series run.
Does feel like some weird cut off there. Obviously the cast changes with Judy disappearing, and Rachel role reduced, (in the last season Richie disappears, so I assume Rachel finally took her kid off the Winslows hands off screen) but the show feels different. It does feel it was dramatic at times, season 5 had that gun shooting episode. And while the first 4 seasons felt more like a even balance between Urkel and the Winslow family, seasons 5- 9, it is the full on Steve Urkel show.

I never got over Carl leaving Harriette for some new lady named Baby when they moved to CBS.

It was a network mandate to change the tone. Urkel brought ratings for bette ror for worse

I'd like a similar comparison done to Happy Days.

Family Matters was produced by the same people as Happy Days, so it’s no coincidence that they ran with the Urkel character once it got hot. They did the same thing with Fonzie. I remember seeing a video where Ron Howard was told that they wanted to change the title of the show to “Fonzie’s Happy Days”, which Ron didn’t like so they never officially made the switch. It pretty much became the “Urkel Show” with the Family Matters name. I don’t think the cast cared since the show without Urkel would have been canned pretty early if he never arrived.
I liked Family Matters a lot better in the earlier seasons. The sci-fi stuff just killed it for me, even though I still watched every episode.

He had too much respect for the rest of the HD cast.
