I find it distracting and hard to follow the wrestling match that is on the same time as the commercial

The current way of doing PIP during commercials comes from the sports world. NASCAR was probably the first to start consistently running PIP during commercials, which is understandable since the races don’t pause for commercials and a wreck or something else significant might happen. But other sports broadcasts have started doing this as well. I believe ESPN uses it during some (not all) breaks in their college football & basketball broadcasts. Usually it’s during TV timeouts anyway so PIP isn’t really necessary, but I guess it’s part of their effort to make viewers feel more like they’re at the game. NFL broadcasts have even started doing PIP in short spurts—though it’s usually just a single ad during coach-called timeouts or a play review.
So I guess it’s kind of a natural progression that the wrestling broadcasts that at least claim to have a more sports feel (SD, NXT, AEW) would adopt the practice as well. (It’s notable that Raw, the most blatantly theatrical one of them all, hasn’t adopted it as a practice.)
Personally, it doesn’t bother me too much. Maybe it’s partly because I’m used to it from sports broadcasts, but I also feel it’s better than missing pieces of matches entirely. The only thing that does bother me is that if you’re watching it on the TNT/USA/etc. app, either live or later on demand (which is how I watch most of my TV wrestling), the streaming ad sets are different from the TV ad sets & don’t run PIP. So those viewers miss out on the extra content.

TBH I haven’t watched a full live SD since the move. I suppose Fox could still do PIP during national ads (though not during the local affiliate avails of course) if they wanted to. Fox is known for being pretty innovative with their sports presentations, & I believe they use PIP in some of their other sports broadcasts. On SD, they must just not think it’s worth it.

IMO, the PiP works so well on NXT & AEW, because those are the two wrestling shows that actually try to go for a sports-style presentation of their in-ring action, so it makes sense they'd emulate sporting event things like PiP ad breaks.
