Basically, a lot of wrestlers who weren't white or black got new ethnicities as part of their gimmicks. Middle Easterners portrayed Native Americans (Adnan Al-Kassie's years as Billy White Wolf), Hispanics played Middle Easterners, and so on. Hell, I just brought it up in another thread, but there was a point during the mid-90s where there were five or six Japanese characters in the WWF and only one was actually Japanese.

It’s much easier to employ somebody who is a US citizen. Somebody of Japanese decent from Japan most likely speaks English an doesn’t have travel restrictions.
Today, in a faster paced world it seems like a no brainer, but back 50 years ago it wasn’t. First and foremost it was likely for financial and travel reasons.
Why do you think?

Also things like making contact with them would be difficult. Today you can shoot off an email or a dm or whatever and they can get back to you at their leisure. As opposed to at the time you'd basically have to call and there's a 14 hour Time Difference from New York, and a 17 hour time difference from Los Angeles.

Out of curiosity, why does Hawaii have a sizeable portion of people with Japanese descent? I mean, I imagine that the Japanese individual wanting to start a fresh life in America would've gone to the mainland as opposed to a small island like Hawaii? (not to disrespect Hawaii or it's people.) Japanese people had been populating Hawaii since the early 1800's, looooooong before it was ever an American state (and quite a while before America had even gotten out west). In the early part of this century, a census showed that over 40% of Hawaiians were of Japanese descent. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_in_HawaiiAs the link seems to indicate, the Japanese culture seemed to have a pretty low regard for the folks who did emigrate out there. The laborer class who were leaving the mainland did not seem to be well looked upon by the ruling class they were leaving behind...

Hawaii is much, much closer, and there are also some Japanese businesses, families, etc, with financial stakes there. It's complicated, but it wasn't just the US that took interest in the islands and wanted to set up shop, not always in the most scrupulous of ways. It's way too complex a topic to get into here, though, and you would be better served looking up native thoughts on the topic. Fair enough, not to get too deep into it, but it is interesting how WWF went to the 'Give the Hawaiian a Japanese character' so often around the same time period, like they didn't really try anything different. Pat tanaka is japanese american So is ricky steamboat Hawaii has a very large asian population I will chalk this up to ignorance. But yeah not all of america is white

I don’t think Yoko was actually really portrayed as Japanese. They said he was from the Polynesian Islands. Fuji carried a Japanese flag and Yoko did the sumo stuff but I think they mostly let people fill in the gaps.

From the US mainland but a shout out to Jimmy Wang Yang. Born to white and Korean parents in California but briefly played Aiko in Tajiri’s short lived yakuza themed stable (he had far better matches as Aiko than he ever did under the cowboy gimmick for some reason).

Some Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders did travel to Japan to learn sumo and martial arts and were good at it But then guys like Haku and Akebono never had japanese gimmicks. A lot of gimmicks are based on ethnicity and race because americans were less likely to accept say Ali or Tozawa or even Humberto as faces based on the way they look
