I really liked how at the time they were poking fun at these classic cartoon characters but at the same time paying respects to a lot of them. I really liked how they broke kayfabe when they announced the match I don't think WWF ever referred to anyone having a gimmick before prior to this. It celebrated the sillyness of wrestling and let some old timers have a nice payday on the grandest stage of them all. I wish they would do another.

Even as a kid who didn’t know any of them (other than maybe Doink) I loved this. I always felt sad for The Goon who got absolutely no reaction from an Attitude era crowd! Same with the Gimmick Battle Royals spiritual successor, the RAW 15th Anniversary Battle Royal:
I’m always game for another one of these.

It preceded the nostalgia craze by a couple years.....maybe even a few. So yeah, a bit ahead of its time. But still appreciated (certainly by this person typing the post you're reading) I always felt sad for The Goon who got absolutely no reaction from an Attitude era crowd! I watched WWF TV when he was originally around (a few months in 1996 IIRC) and I didn't remember him at all and presumably the WWF/E Universe did not either.

I loved it at the time, and still do. Also Bobby Heenan and Mean Gene are in top form throughout, you can hear Heyman in stitches off mic at some of their one liners.
If anything we should have more of them.
Also, with internet not being so widespread back then, imagine being an old school fan of Earthquake, or Kamala, or The One Man Gang or someone and not knowing that was going to happen till they turned up.
I think the only Mania surprise like that I can remember catching me off guard was Roddy Piper showing up at Mania 19.

PS If still alive and well (cross fingers on both), WrestleMania 38 has to start with Iron Sheik in the middle of the ring. Play off the long, long joke.

Problem is a lot of guys have passed on now. We’re going to end up with a Ruthless Aggression battle royal filled with the forgotten 2000s superstars from the other thread.

I mean you could do one from around 2003 (I mean if Iron Shiek was able to compete, even if not allowed to take a bump then nearly everyone is fair game)
Example 20 man list - some may be ineligible to medical reasons I don't know about.
Lance Storm Rikishi RVD Hurricane Albert Shelton Benjamin Chavo Guerrero Renee Dupree Tajiri Gangrel Val Venis Hardcore Holly Eugene Maven Scotty 2 Hotty Snitsky Heidenreich Carlito Chris Masters Tyson Tomko

To me, matches like this are exactly how you use Legends if you are going to have them in the ring.
For example, I wouldn't want to see a one on one RVD vs Sandman match in 2020, but a hardcore battle royal with all the ECW legends that are still around.

I was 100% convinced at the time that it was an April Fool's joke since Mania was April 1st that year.

Now I want to see an ECW Legend Last Man Standing Battle Royale. Have like a dozen dudes beating on each other with weapons and doing stupid spots for about 15 minutes. If you are down for a full ten count you are eliminated until we have one winner.

For sure. So ahead, the Iron Sheik still has 2 wrestlemania left to make it to the ring!

I was 100% convinced at the time that it was an April Fool's joke since Mania was April 1st that year. What was particular great about the timing was that it happened around the 1 year anniversary of the original WrestleCrap site, and they were able to play it up like they had something to do with it.

I always try and find the original version of the WM17 match whenever I wish to watch it, mainly because the home video releases always dubbed over Badstreet for Michael Hayes entrance and you never, ever dub such a bad ass theme

The WWE Network version does, too. In fact, I can't recall anytime WWE has dubbed over it. Right now, they use it on the Network as a replacement for the 1992 Freebirds theme on WCW shows.

Outside the batshit folk like Billy Jack, the weirdest shoot interview I ever heard. Even more than Billy in fact, because you take him being nuts at face value, whereas Val sits there chatting amiably about wrestling, then randomly goes down tangents like how he dislikes Martha Hart for suing after Owen died as he disagrees with the principle of wrongful death lawsuits.

As Bruce recently brought up, it's harder to do now. WWE employees have to pass a medical before they enter the ring. He pretty much said on SOTW with, they through everyone out there who wanted to go. Sheik could not go over the top rope, which is why he won
